Only 87 wrestlers as of now are signed up. It is in Towanda this year, just east of Wichita, almost to Eldorado.

Last year we had 305 wrestlers. There is still time to register and surpass this number. Missouri had over 500 wrestlers at their Freestyle state tournament! Lets get signed up!

What is the rule on making weight. If a wrestler signs up at a certain weight, can they move up or down at weigh in. Example.. Signs up at 100, weighs in at 103, can they move up? Or if signs up at 105 and weighs in at 99, can they move down?

The wrestler will be placed at the weight indicated on the weigh-in sheet.

As long as the wrestler has pre-registered, the wrestler will be placed in the appropriate weight classification based on his recorded weight at weigh-in, unless the wrestler specifically requests to be placed in a higher weight classification.

Example: Wrestler weighs in at 139.8 and does not wish to be placed in the 140 lb. classification but requests to be placed at 145 lbs., the wrestler will be placed at 145 lb. weight classification.

So basiclly what you sign up at is not an issue, just what you weigh in at. Unlike folkstyle, you will not be bumped due to not making weight. Correct?

You can move weight. That is correct. There is no walk-up registration so hopefully people are just waiting to build the suspense. I am guessing we will finish with about 200 entries. That would be over a 30% drop from last year. Looks at least at this point the move back to first week of June was not a good one.

I am not sure there is a valid "cause & effect" between the date change and the low registration. The economy has affected a lot of families. This results in less travel and the need for many kids to find a summer job. I am not a fan of the earlier date because it conflicts with many end of school activities such as prom (before Mr. Cokeley chimes in, yes I am a mom), those important finals and graduation.

I don't think last year's 300 is even a good number for a State tournament. The low numbers make winning a little less meaningful. It would be interesting to set up a poll to try to determine the real cause for lack of interest.

Registration has closed with 236 total participants. Down 23% from 2008. In 2007 we had around 220 wrestlers. In 2008 the tournament was in May and had 305 participants, 40% more than the prior year. I think it is safe to say, in spite of graduation, baseball, track, prom, etc. conflicts in May it is still a better date. The data supports it. I know that many wanted to have "more time for more tournaments." After Folkstyle state was complete the first club hosted FS/GR event was more than a month later. The last club hosted evented at STA only had around 125 wrestlers. There is time for more before a May date. Lets make a data supported decision and move the tournament back into May.

I would call the numbers on the flyer. Can't tell you I would be optimistic. As much as we need participation maybe they would make an exception.

I vote for the mid-May date for State.
