I was wondering if anyone in the wrestling community had any suggestions about the format of a takedown tournament. At last year's SSG, we ran it as 3 - 1 minute periods. If a takedown occurred, the period was over. If no takedown was scored, it was a draw. This ran well, but was very short. I didn't know if there was a better way out there that someone would be willing to share?

Some ideas are:
Unlimited time - best of 3
Unlimited time - First one to 5 wins
1 block of time, continuous, 1st to X, wins
1 block of time, continuous, the most takedowns wins

Any and all suggestions will be considered. Thanks!

Here is a takedown tournament format ran by Hilsboro. The following rules are used.
Scoring:
*1 pt. is awarded for gaining a normal takedown (example: single leg)
*2 pts. are awarded for a takedown in which the defensive wrestler is taken directly to his/her back and held for a one, two, three, or four count.
*3 pts. are awarded for a takedown in which the defensive wrestler is taken directly to his/her back and held for at least a five count.
Matches will consist of one 3-min. period.
At anytime during a back exposure, if the referee notes that the back fits “FALL Criteria” there is a pin and the match is over.
At anytime during the match, if one wrestler leads by 10 pts. it is considered a “technical fall” and the match is over.
After points are awarded, the clock will stop and the wrestlers will be placed back into the neutral position.
If there is a tie at the end of the regular period, the match will go into overtime. Overtime will consist of one sudden death one-minute period in the neutral position. If the tie remains, we will use the 30-second tiebreaker series.
Stalling will be called. (Warning, 1 pt., 1 pt., 2 pts., Disqualify)
