I think it is great that some are seeing an increase in their novice numbers; this is ultimately the lifeline of any club. The other part of the equation is maintaining good numbers on the experienced side as well as the participation rate. Understanding that these can decrease for a number of reasons I believe in tough times, as we are now, club’s and more specifically tournament directors need to be especially sensitive to current economic conditions when planning their tournaments. Anything that we can do to lessen the burden for families, whether it is financial, time commitment or otherwise will be a huge positive in maintaining and attracting numbers.
There have been some innovative ideas e.g. split tournaments, remote weigh-in, bundling of benefits etc. that have been implemented with positive results.
I know families will have to make tough decisions this year on which tourney’s they will attend and which weekends they take off. By continuing to make it easier, cheaper and more of a positive experience for those wanting to participate we ultimately strengthen our sport. If you have anything special planned in these areas for your tourney, share them! You never know how contagious it might be and who you may be helping in the end.
