Our club has been going to more MO tournaments in the last couple of years. I absolutely love the way the MO officials reward the aggressive wrestlers. KS lets the kids back up on their feet consistently. Backing up is stalling.Period. MO officials call it. In Open it should be called. I do see more of it at State, but do not understand why it isn't and emphasis.
The more exciting wrestling is the more fans we draw.
Any thoughts?

I do agree with you but I think I've seen it alot more this year then ever before! At Ark City they were all over it!!! Even on the novice side! I think tournament directors should really have long talks with their head refs and let them know what kind of tournament they are wanting to have & that should roll down hill.

I think for the most part our officials do a fairly good job on stall calls, different styles of wrestling are just that....If you want to see stalling thats hardly called go south, but you have to adjust your wrestling and coaching to this style of ref-ing......I also like an Iowa style, but also have to Okie as well at times........depends on where you re at.

mo refs usually call stalling more on the feet, but fail to call it on the mat. we wrestle alot in mo, and always struggle with mo, wrestlers riding hips and sitting, without trying to turn. again its different styles, we also don't wrestle with many that as good as most ks wrestlers on their feet. they seem to look for headlocks and snakes, not many shooters.

MO. Is a differnt animal. We aren't really comparing apples to apples. First Ks. 1-1-1 min Periods in 6,8,10 under is crap and it takes alot us pushing to get a stalling call in that short amount of time. And further more and this is going to start alot cause we don't like to hear it, but Mo. wrestling is in "MY OPINION" is tougher and more competive. YA I SAID IT!! Wanna fight about it big woop. We live right on the boarder of kansas and missouri and wrestle alot in both and thats what we have found. And I belive the nature of the officating probobly reflects it. Thats just my experiences i've acually been thrown out of tourneys in both states.

i agree with your opinion, nw mo wrestling is tougher than ne ks, not too big of a statement. i think purler has had a pretty good hold on that area (nw mo)for some time, i bet you will see that change some in the next few years, akin, phippen, cokeley, and the others have the east ks club going strong again. they also welcome all wrestlers into their room, that will raise the level of competition very quickly. it also depends on your level of competition, we wrestle on the national level alot, and don't really see any more competition from mo, as we do from say, the wichita area. again MY OPINION.

In Rossville I saw a call that also needs to be used more. "Fleeing the Mat" and they also called stalling more than normal. I do agree that stalling on your feet needs to be called more. I know that our club coaches to move forward or circle and not to back up. It used to be called stalling if your first move was backwards. Maybe we need to go back to that

What I have noticed is when my kid is running the clock it appears to me as good smart wrestling. When the other kid is doing it it appears to me as stalling & cheating

Well I sort of agree. However its not just the NW MO. Nick Purlers got a great grip on south mo. Also its not just a question of coaching, its support by highschools, middleschool athletics. Mo. embraces thier feeder programs and support them whole 100%. Ks. tends to treat the wrestling program like a stepson no one likes. Go to most any Middle school Tournament and most often you'll see the science teacher holding a "WRESTLING FOR DUMMIES BOOK" and screaming HALF,HALF. they are for lack of a better disciption a joke.
Also Mo. wrestlers treat this as a year round lifestyle not a sport. Go into any of Akin, Phippen, Roath. summer practices and you'll see ten maybe fifteen wrestlers and thats a great step in the right direction. Walk into PURLER, VICTORY, PARKHILL summer practice you'll see THIRTY or FORTY kids.
Also I hear so often "and this really pisses me off" how kids programs frown upon seeking outside instruction from these Coaches and programs. To the tune of repremanding wrestler and parents for missing tuesdays practice to go somewhere else. Where they find more competion and a more focused group of wrestlers its CRAP!!!! How can you punish a kid for wanting to be better!!!

see i'm in se ks and we wrestle all the time in sw mo. i do think that the communities support wrestling better. they have also figured out the whole practice where you get better thing. we have got that going on down here now too, just not to the level that one would like. i see the little league, and football programs are supported better in mo, also. i don't know that i think they have better kids i think that its just a bigger deal.

I think things have changed from the past in MO officiating. They use to call stalling if you were on the hip for more than a second. We use to call them takedown tounaments. But then this Wisconsin kid showed up who was awesome on top turning and riding and the concept spread to the grassroots. The lost art of riding and working for a pin returned. It is amazing what a National Champ can do for a college program or even a whole state. Any one else see this metamorphsis, agree or disagree?
As for which side is tougher, I think certain individuals on both sides are some of the toughest in the country or world. I have a plaque to prove it!

My question is, how many of these schools that you describe are getting help back from the clubs within their district? One hand washes the other. If clubs aren't helping out their middle school and high school programs both physically (supplying help to duals and tournaments) and monetarily (buying mats etc.), then the clubs have no right to complain about a lack of support coming back at them. Everyone has to realize that the only job of the wrestling club, or any sport for that matter, isn't just to supply talent to the school. Our job is to be supportive in any way possible. How many of our clubs attend our high school duals on Thursdays or is it more important to be practicing that one night? How many of us attend out school's tournaments, or is it more important to hit on more youth tournament that Saturday? As I said, one hand washes the other. Go to most any Middle school Tournament and most often you'll see the science teacher holding a "WRESTLING FOR DUMMIES BOOK" and screaming HALF,HALF. they are for lack of a better disciption a joke.
But, would we rather see a wrestling coach teaching out of a Math/English For Dummies book? Yes some states will always put more emphasis on athletics than schooling, there is nothing we can do to compete with those who don't value an education.

I would think that we would be more concerned about background checks for officials so that we don't have officials with aggravated batteries or meth convictions around young kids before we worry about stalling calls. Just my opinion. Jerry Dale 316-288-6753

[quote=hotrodder54] hmmm... I do not have my kids in youth wrestling to supply talent to a school or to help in any way possible. I have my kids in wrestling so they can learn how to wrestle. The providing talent & helping any way possible just comes with the territory. Second point, in my opinion practice and mat time are more important then watching a dual or tournament.
