No. 15 Tigers Knock Off No. 12 Mountaineers to Remain Unbeaten in the RMAC

The Fort Hays State wrestling squad hosted Western State College in a battle of ranked teams at Gross Memorial Coliseum on Friday evening (Feb. 5). The Tigers, ranked No. 15 in the nation, defeated the No. 12 ranked Mountaineers by a score of 27-10 to remain unbeaten in RMAC duals. The win keeps the Tigers in first place in the conference standings. It was the second consecutive win for the Tigers over a higher ranked opponent.
The dual began at 125 pounds. The Tigers quickly jumped on the Mountaineers winning the first three matches of the evening. Tommy Edgmon, ranked No. 4 at 125 pounds, and Travis Kuhn at 133 each scored narrow one-point decisions over their opponents to give the Tigers a 6-0 lead. Aldon Isenberg, wrestling in place of No. 2 ranked Andre Harrison at 141, filled in tremendously with a fall at 3:39 to give the Tigers an early 12-point advantage in the dual.
The Mountaineers cut the Tiger lead in half before intermission. Caleb Lockyear of WSC defeated Levi Younkin with an 8-6 decision and Kyle Francis of WSC upset No. 4 ranked Danny Grater at 157 pounds with a 7-4 decision.
The Tigers put the dual away in the first two matches following intermission. Blake Malloy, ranked No. 7 at 165, picked up a 10-7 decision and Shawn Kuhlman scored a 9-2 decision at 174, running the Tiger lead to 18-6. With the Mountaineers open at 184, a 24-6 lead by the Tigers was insurmountable.
Western State picked up one more win with No. 4 ranked Donavan McMahill picking up a 16-5 major decision over Steven Kyler at 197. Justin Glenn capped the win for FHSU with a 3-2 decision in the heavyweight match.
The Tigers moved to 7-3 overall and 5-0 in the RMAC. Western State moved to 6-4 overall and 3-2 in the RMAC. The Tigers go again tomorrow night (Feb. 6) when they host Colorado Mines in Hays. Dual begins at 5 pm.
