No. 15 Tigers Knock Off No. 12 Mountaineers to Remain Unbeaten in the RMAC Feb. 5, 2010 The Fort Hays State wrestling squad hosted Western State College in a battle of ranked teams at Gross Memorial Coliseum on Friday evening (Feb. 5). The Tigers, ranked No. 15 in the nation, defeated the No. 12 ranked Mountaineers by a score of 27-10 to remain unbeaten in RMAC duals. The win keeps the Tigers in first place in the conference standings. It was the second consecutive win for the Tigers over a higher ranked opponent. The dual began at 125 pounds. The Tigers quickly jumped on the Mountaineers winning the first three matches of the evening. Tommy Edgmon, ranked No. 4 at 125 pounds, and Travis Kuhn at 133 each scored narrow one-point decisions over their opponents to give the Tigers a 6-0 lead. Aldon Isenberg, wrestling in place of No. 2 ranked Andre Harrison at 141, filled in tremendously with a fall at 3:39 to give the Tigers an early 12-point advantage in the dual.
The Mountaineers cut the Tiger lead in half before intermission. Caleb Lockyear of WSC defeated Levi Younkin with an 8-6 decision and Kyle Francis of WSC upset No. 4 ranked Danny Grater at 157 pounds with a 7-4 decision.
The Tigers put the dual away in the first two matches following intermission. Blake Malloy, ranked No. 7 at 165, picked up a 10-7 decision and Shawn Kuhlman scored a 9-2 decision at 174, running the Tiger lead to 18-6. With the Mountaineers open at 184, a 24-6 lead by the Tigers was insurmountable.
Western State picked up one more win with No. 4 ranked Donavan McMahill picking up a 16-5 major decision over Steven Kyler at 197. Justin Glenn capped the win for FHSU with a 3-2 decision in the heavyweight match.
The Tigers moved to 7-3 overall and 5-0 in the RMAC. Western State moved to 6-4 overall and 3-2 in the RMAC. The Tigers go again tomorrow night (Feb. 6) when they host Colorado Mines in Hays. Dual begins at 5 pm.

Dual begins at 5 pm. I thought that FHSU joined the MIAA a few years ago or was that just in Football and the James Naismith word? Do they not wrestle in the MIAA because so few teams have wrestling? I know UNO, CMSU, and Truman State all have wrestling programs and are in the MIAA.

FHSU does wrestle in the MIAA. The MIAA Duals will be held in Hays next Sunday, 2/14 beginning at noon.

Yes, but it looks like they are still in the leauge standings for the RMAC. That's okay, FHSU can just win two leauges in one year. However, they've got a tough out in UNO.

RMAC Wrestling: Fort Hays State San Francisco State Grand Canyon Nebraska-Kearney Colorado State-Pueblo Adams State Western State Mesa State Colorado New Mexico Highlands Chadron State
Wrestling does not appear to be a sponsored sport of the MIAA. Someone else probably has more information on this than I do though.

This RMAC vs MIAA confusion is bugging me. The RMAC site does not show FHSU in their list of schools, but does include them in the rankings. The MIAA site shows FHSU in their list of schools, but does not include wrestling in their list of men's sports. This must be an oversite because I know 4 MIAA schools have wrestling - UCM, Truman, FHSU & UNO. The MIAA site also provided a very nice article about Cody Garcia and his success in wrestling, so I know they cover wresting.
I sent an email to the MIAA site to find out why wrestling is not listed as a men's sport. We'll see what response I receive.

I just had this explained to me recently. If I remember right, wrestling is not an MIAA sponsored sport so FHSU competes in the RMAC. It's not an unusual thing for sports to be split into different conferences. I know a few years back the Big East invited several schools in for just their basketball or football programs. The only thing that still has me scratching my head is the MIAA duals that are coming up next weekend. All of the schools Lou Ann mentioned above will be there. I wonder if this is just a deal the wrestling programs have decided to do themselves.

FHSU is in the MIAA conference. The MIAA conference doesn't have wrestling because there are only 4 schools that have wrestling in the conference. The RMAC said that because of this, FHSU can continue to wrestle in the RMAC, even though all their other sports are in the MIAA. The MIAA duals started last year and was decided upon by the schools in the MIAA that had wrestling (Truman, UNO, CMSU, and FHSU). Truman, UNO, and CMSU will all wrestle regionals in Warrensburg, MO while FHSU will be at the RMAC/Championships regional in Alamosa, CO.
San Francisco State and Grand Canyon University are also members of the RMAC in wrestling ONLY. SFSU is in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and Grand Canyon is in the Pacific West Conference. This is not uncommon and can happen with any sport who's school's conference doesn't have enough members that have that sport.
