Does anyone have any clue when the Senior Classic is scheduled for this year? In the past it was scheduled the same week that Kansas Kids state was. This year the 21st Annual High School Senior Nationals Wrestling Championships are schedule at the same time. Any thoughts?

If I remember correctly, the Senior Classic will be held at Emporia High School on Sunday, March 14, 2010. The time to be determined.

Who decides on the location for this event? Not exactly geographically friendly.

it was in Topeka last year. we don't exist out here in the west so it's always back east.

Most of us wouldn't consider Emporia exactly "east".

"Most" of you must not look at a map then! I think it's great when it's held at the Expocentre in Topeka because it increases the attendance 10 fold. However on a year like this when nationals is on the same weekend and it has to be held at a different venue it would be nice if it was at least as far West as Salina.

And why would we hold it so far north?

Because it's right at the intersection of the 2 major Interstate Highways for one, but if you want a more technical answer:

Salina: from the western border of Kansas is 59.9% of the way across the state. From the southern border it is 61.11%

Emporia: from the western border of Kansas is 78.79% of the way across the state. From the southern border it is 46.29%.

The State of Kansas is approximately 400 miles from East to West and 210 Miles from North to South. Based on the above percentages, if you calculated the distance from the exact center of Kansas, Salina lies 38.36 miles East and 23.33 miles North of the exact center of Kansas. Emporia lies 115.16 miles East and 7.79 miles South of the exact center. So if driven only moving in a perpindicular fashion (North, South, East, and West only) Salina is 61.26 miles closer to the center of Kansas than Emporia is. If you go "as the crow flies" Salina is 44.90 miles from the center of Kansas whereas Emporia is 115.42 miles. For the record, the closest city to the center would be Great Bend which is approximately 15 miles away from the center of Kansas.

Like I said, it's fine when it's in Topeka right before kids state, but it would be nice if it were set up a little more central when it is not possible to have it at the expocentre.

It's a huge honor to be asked to wrestle in the East West or Big School Small School Classic, and most parents and kids are more than willing to make the drive to such a prestigious event no matter where it is located. I was just agreeing that it is always held in the Eastern half...and I like math problems wink

Stop with the mileage and simply look at a map of the state and tell me Salina is slighty more than half way from the south border. By all appearances it is about 3/4 of the way to the north border.
I know that the east to west is an issue but you have to remmber, this side of the state is where all the people live. You western Kansas people need to get used to longer drives anyway with the consolidation that is coming.

Good job, Dylan. Hard to argue with the digits.

And while we are dreaming here, why couldn't the Senior Classic be held in Great Bend? A nice venue at BCCC and not far off the interstate.

Let's see, the state of Kansas is approximately 417 miles wide from east to west. And Emporia is less than 100 miles to the Missouri border, yet you do not consider that exactly "east"??? Please don't tell me you were a Geography major.

And very good points Dylan, kind of hard to argue with the facts.

i think one thing to ponder is attendance. with the tournament being held in a more populated area, there will surely be more chance to fill seats with the casual fan, not just immediate family.

but dylan makes a good point, somebody get ahold of a farmer close to the actual center of the state, buy some land, and build a huge sports complex.

i would like to see all state championships/ major sporting events held at 1 location, not just wrestling.

We would call that mid-east around here, not east. Just like we live in southcentral. Again I refer you to any state map.

He's right guys. We ain't from around them parts. 'Round them parts they call it mid east unless it's all the way against the eastern border. Reckon we don't get the schoolin' out West to know no different.

This argument has gotten stupid. The only point we were trying to make is that it's always held in the Eastern half of the state. As far as attendance, we have a pretty big following out West. I'm not suggesting we hold it in St Francis, Salina just seems like a good location that's a little more central.

Honestly I think the best solution would be to make sure that our Kids State tournament always falls on a different weekend than high school nationals. That way we can have the Big School Small School at Topeka every year and then the boys can also wrestle in the state tournament.

I have traveled to Buhler to see it, and I believe it might have been held in Hutch recently? My point is, you hold it as close to the center of the state as possible to be fair to all parties. I don't like it in Topeka as well, but my guess is that generates the best attendance.

Sounds like an East vs West war is brewing. Well, maybe no one will like my opinion but, I never joined this to make friends so here goes nothing. I grew up in Western and North Central KS and currently reside in Eastern KS(KC).

If you stick to the geographic, mathmatical and economical facts, it makes more sense to hold in a centrally located venue to all parties not one region or the other. Kansas covers 82,282 square miles, in which the geographic center of Kansas is located in Barton County, 15 miles NE of Great Bend. Kansas is about 400 miles long and 210 miles wide. The cost of gas is $2.35-$2.79 depending on your location. Hotels range from $35.00-$115.00.

Leave out the opinions, please stick to facts. I sure do not like to drive or stay over night in a hotel/motel but for good wrestling we all do what we have too.
