For those that have never been, this is one of the true TREATS in college athletics. "The Bedlam Series" has nothing whatever to do with basketball, football or any other sport. It is WRESTLING!!! It must have been about 1966 or so, when WKY took it upon themselves to send a black and white camera crew and televise (live) what the wrestling world knew was bedlam. I will NEVER forget that night. My father had absolutely no use for wrestling, he played basketball for a while in Norman, but you could feel the electricity thru the black and white screen and the old field house must have had 9,000 screaming fans in attendance.
The match went back and forth all nite......hysteria broke out every time someone flinched on the mat....when a point was scored, there was no hearing the announcers. By the time they were wrestling about 160, I had figured out what the hand signals meant, you simply could not hear the announcers.
Well, my Dad was with Phillips in those days and got tickets somehow for the return match. I have no idea who won the first one, but I think it was OSU something like 15-13. Anyway, Dad took me to Gallagher Hall......wow. I watched OU edge OSU en route to upsetting OSU for the Big VIII title, I think. All I really remember was screaming my fool head off and not being able to hear a single note of Boomer Sooner. That place was bedlam.
I really, really, really wish we could go with ya'll. I watched OU down Oreon State Sunday with Cap, that was kind of fun. Bedlam, however is worse than watching OU-Texas play football. OU doesn't have the inferiority complex they have in Stillwater and the pokes have a HUGE advantage in the duals. They really crow over it.........
