Do the Districts take into account the number of clubs in each one? District 1 has 69 teams vs District 4 with 38. This doesn't seem fair. The top 6 kids could be from District 1. Doesn't this limit the sport and hurt the kids?

Each district takes 4 kids in each weight and age group to state. Yes this does hurt some districts. But, on the other hand how far does district 1 have to drive to enter into a tournament that has tough competition. Not very far, unlike district 4. With all of the down sides of where you live there is always an upside. One district may be weak and easier to qualifiy for state but this weaker competition doesn't help them when it comes to placing at state.

I am sure the length of the drive is NOT a factor when making rules with fairness. It looks like the metro area could have their own district.

To: forvac, it varies for year to year and also age and weight. Take the 10U 67# class from D4 this year. It is tough. I will say being from district 4 (small pool) that when we head east it makes us better because of the tougher competition. If the pool of kids is bigger the odds are that there will be better kids come out of that pool rather than a smaller pool. The more kids you have the better you have to be to rise to the top.

To: Iowastyle, I wasn't saying that the lenght of drive has anything to do with the fairness of making the rules. The length of drive goes back to the size of pool. Not a bad idea fo having the metro area have their own district. If you add a district how do you end up to state with jus 16 kids. I am sure this has all been thought out before and there is probably no way to do it and be totaly fair to all concerned.

All of this is just my opinion, each and everyone is entitled to their own.

Iowa,
First, it doesn't matter how many teams in a district, it is the number of kids in a district. I don't know how to establish this number. I am not in district 4 or district 1, but from experience there seems to be more small clubs in Eastern Kansas than there are in Western Kansas. Again this may be wrong and I can't substantiate with hard numbers, this is just a personal observation. Second, the top 6 wrestlers at any age and weight are not likely from any one district, and if it did happen, it could just as easily be from District 4 as District 1. Every year there are kids who would have qualified if they lived in a different district, but the 6th best from any district is not likely better than everyone else in the state.

But they aren't! Besides, District 1 usually takes a few more in a weight class than allowed anyway.

District One Championships will be at the Cook Center at MNU in Olathe. We just recently aquired the address for the Cook Center and it will be chartered soon.

Sportsfan, I said COULD. My point is more for promoting the sport of wrestling. The kids that have to compete at a larger district that get beat out may not make it back next year. If this kid was in a small district, he may have won it, making it to state. I am sure the small districts like the system the way it is. I don't even know if it is a problem. Just an observation from a wrestling fan from the info provided on the number of clubs per district.

I don't think it is a big deal IowaStyle. High schools face the same situation. For example in 4A, in years past and even now there tends to be 1 regional that has 4 or 5 of the top placing teams at State, while the other 3 regionals don't have as good of competition. But ultimatly the kids that are going to place do so anyway because they qualify and then place at state the following week.

To take Nigel's point a step further: Kids from my 4a high school have to qualify top 4 at regional, with 16 teams at the regional. 5a and 6a only have 8 teams. You have to be top 25% of your regional in 4a, only top half in 5a.

It is set up as fairly as it can reasonably be set up. I would have to think awfully hard to come up with even a single weight class, where a 5th best kid from a district, was much better than a 6th place kid at state.

I think some people put too much emphasis on good teams at regionals. Teams do not advance to the state tournament, individuals do. I see a lot of good wrestlers at the regional tournament, even though they aren't on a top ten team. These wildcards can advance to the state tournament and upset other teams chances, even though their team is not very strong.

Maybe the 5th place kids from each district should have a 4 man round robin and then the winner of the 4 man round robin gets to challenge any of the top 6 wrestlers at state in his/hers age and weight class. But, only gets to pick one. Maybe that would solve any problems. What if the wrestler that won the 4 man round robin is from District 2. And the State Champion wrestler is from district 4. Is the district 2 wrestler going to challenge the weaker district 4 state champion or the tougher district 2 wrestler who placed 3rd?? Decisions, Decisions.
