WPU NewsStatesmen Lose Home Meet 24-18 to BakerTue, Dec 7, 2010 at 8:12 PM - [Wrestling]
Matt Woollums pinned his opponent in a time of 7:10 at 197 poundsOskaloosa--In the first of two dual meets between the programs this season, the Penn wrestling team could not dig out of a sizeable hole and lost 24-18 to Baker (Kan.) Tuesday.
Penn (1-2) lost five of the nine contested matches (forfeited the other), but claimed to victories via fall. The pair of Central Qualifying Group squads will take on each other one more time this year in a February 9 dual in Baldwin City, Kan.
Action began with the 141-pound matchup and Penn struggled in the early matches, falling behind 11-0.
Joe Range (Fr., Burlington, Burlington HS) finally got the home team on the board with a 6-3 win at 165 pounds.
The Statesmen lost the next two contests, including a forfeit at 184 pounds before 197-pounder Matt Woollums (Sr., Chariton, Chariton HS) was able to flatten Brandon Gebhardt for a fall at the 7:10 mark.
The win cut the deficit to 20-9, but a loss at heavyweight mathematically eliminated Penn's chances as Baker remained perfect at 3-0.
125-pounder Taylor Louie (Sr., West Covina, Calif., West Covina HS) and 133-pounder David Crow (Sr., Baumholder, Germany, Baumholder HS) made the final score a bit more palatable with back-to-back victories.
Louie pinned AJ Gassman in a time of 4:49, while Crow held off Josh Haugen 10-6 to end the evening.
The falls are the fourth of the year for Louie and the second for Woollums.
Next: Penn ends its pre-holiday slate by traveling to Storm Lake Saturday to compete in the Buena Vista Open. Action begins at 9 a.m.

OSKALOOSA, Iowa – After traveling over 2000 miles the past month, the Baker University wrestling team continues to dazzle as it improved to 3-0 in duals with a 25-18 victory over William Penn (Iowa) on Tuesday evening.
Phillip Henes and Jarell Price put the Wildcats ahead early with victories in their respective weight classes (141 lbs and 149 lbs).
Baker held a 20-3 advantage heading into the 197 lb match, but William Penn made a comeback effort after Matt Woollums won by a fall over Brandon Gebhardt at 7:10, pushing the score to 20-9.
Levi Calhoun extended the Baker lead in the 285 lb match, winning by major decision over Nathan Merical, 9-1.
“We have a young team with a lot of character,” said head coach Jimmy May. “We defeated a solid team tonight, I’m very proud of our guys.”

What all teams are in Baker's regional? 7-0 is pretty nice way to start off the program.

2010-2011 Season vs Calumet 41-9 vs Wayland Baptist 40-3 vs William Penn 24-18 Why haven't they wrestled those other 4 teams in the regional? I would think with the price of gas it would be more feasible to save some money early and spend later for Regionals and Nationals.
