Arnold Claims 149 lb. Championship at Jet Invite
12/12/2010 6:25:47 PM

WICHITA - Junior Mitch Arnold claimed championship honors in the 149 lb. weight class, and earned Co-Outstanding Wrestler honors at the First Annual Jet Invitational wrestling tournament, which concluded Sunday at Newman's Fugate Gymnasium. Arnold was one of three Newman wrestlers to advance to the championships in their respective weight class. He was joined by Tyler Hasenbank (197 lbs) and heavyweight Lorenzo Serna.

Mitch Arnold faced little resistance in his journey through the 149 lb. bracket. He won his first match by pinning Jordan Powell in 1:11, then needed just 12 more seconds to pick up his semi-final decision over Ouachita Baptist's Dallas Gracey, pinning Gracey in 1:23. Arnold finally was forced to survive a three-round match in the 149 lb. championship match, where he was able to hold off Truman State's Colton Schmitz for a 3-1 championship decision.

Tyler Hasenbank and Lorenzo Serna were Newman's only other championship contenders. Hasenbank opened his tournament with a 15-0 decision over Truman's Max Muench, then picked up an 11-9 decision over Neosho County Community College's Znick Ferrell to advance to the championship where he was shut-out, 8-0, by Central Oklahoma's Jarrett Edison. Serna, meanwhile, won a tightly-contested 2-0 decision over Neosho's Joey George to open his tournament, then knocked off Central Baptist's John Lopez in an 8-2 decision before bowing out to Central Missouri's Brandon Hayes in the heavyweight championship match.

Ryan Spencer claimed third place honors in the 165 lb. division. Spencer won his first match of the day in a 13-11 decision over Truman's Andy Bader, then dropped a 9-2 decision to Ouachita Baptist's Jake Simpson, but rebounded with a pair of pins to claim third place. Spencer pinned Josh Wells in 2:45 in the consolation semi-finals, then dispatched of Central Missouri's Russell Naylor in just 48 seconds in the third place match.

As a team, Newman finished fifth in the eight-team event. Newman finished with 90 points, and finished with a 23-point cushion over sixth-placed Central Missouri, but trailed fourth-placed Truman by 7.5 points. Central Oklahoma won the event, finishing with 156 points.

Newman will return to action Saturday, traveling to Indianapolis, Ind., for the Midwest Classic.

Not my call on the web cast fee--the athletic department has taken the stance that if we can get a following for basketball with this small fee we should be able to do it with wrestling.

I hope the ones that came out for the tournament enjoyed themselves and we look forward to seeing some fans in the stands when we dual Truman State on January 9th. Check 'Em Off!! Coach Smith
