INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Freshman Lorenzo Serna's eighth-place finish highlighted the Newman wrestling team's trip to Indianapolis, Ind., for the 32nd Annual Midwest Classic, hosted by the University of Indianapolis, last weekend. Serna was Newman's only placer in the event, which featured some of the top wrestling talent from the midwest.
Serna opened his quest through the heavyweight bracket with a 5-2 decision over North Carolina-Pembroke's Seth Stewart before dropping a 4-1 decision to West Liberty's JD Ramsey in the round of 16. The freshman rebounded from the loss to pick up consolation wins over Lincoln's Thomas Redmon (F; 1:00), Mt. St. Jospeh's Sean Jameson (D; 7-2), before being forced into the seventh-place bout after dropping a 9-5 decision to King's Dondricus Anderson. Serna drew the tournament's No. 8 seed, Central Missouri's Brandon Hayes, in the seventh place match, and was defeated in a 10-3 decision to end his tournament.
Tyler Hasenbank missed the 197 lb. eighth-place match by one win. Hasenbank dropped his opening match to Trine's Alex Fleet (D; 9-6), then rebounded for wins over Lake Erie's Bobby Hager (D; 8-7), and Wabash's Dylan McBride (D; 5-3) before bowing out to Campbellsville's Spencer Adams in a 10-6 decision.
Jarod Stephenson (125), Clark Driz (157), and Alex Chaparro (174) also competed in the tournament.
The Jets will return to action Jan. 9 when they host Truman State in a 2 p.m. dual inside Fugate Gymnasium.
