I was on flo today and noticed the publicity that the flo major KC Wrestling Classic received. I went to trackwrestling to see how the KS schools faired at this tournament. Not one school in KS attended this tourney! Was it invite only? One of the toughest tourney in the Midwest within our stupid 500 mile rule, and KS not represented!! WoW please tell me this was invite only!

It's KSHSAA's fault! I don't know how, but it just is!

Truth is most KS coaches don't want the risk of many of their kids going 0-8 and never being able to get a winning record to get seeded at regionals. I was told this for a fact by a coach. They believe it might be good for their top 2-3 kids but won't do it because most of their kids will killed

Accually it is, if not for them some kansas kids could have chosen to go. And it could have given a few underclassman an opportunity to represent thier team in a great tournament. And a few top level Kansas kids the chance to compete in a great tournament. Excellent point sporto I hadn't thought of that. Good lookin out

Didnt Hutch used to compete in this tournament and Romero Cotton won it once or twice?
Possibly Cody Garcia as well?

Check out the format!!!! Very impressive!! The larger tournaments in KS should adapt this format. You are using your points on a 2 day tournament you might as well wrestle as many matches as you can.

8 pools of 4
Top 2 advance to the championship 16 man bracket.
Bottom two advance to the hard luck 16 man bracket.

Great format!!!

There is no KSHSAA rule which disallows a school from entering teams in two (or more) different tournaments on the same weekend. That is, a school could choose to send a team or partial team to tournament "A" the same weekend as entering a team or partial team in tournament "B."

Greg,
This is one tournament. Friday morning pool and fri/sat bracket. One tournament! No one in Kansas has ever (to my knowledge) utilized this format. This is a great format. I am sure that someone at Kshsaa will figure out a way to shut this format down in Kansas!

Jack,

I am not referring to the tournament format; I am referring to the fact that some beleive that KSHSAA rules keep teams/wreslters from entering a certain tournament due to other tournaments going on that same weekend. I was pointing out that a school can enter more than one team in two different tournaments on the same weekend. My post had nothing to do with the format of the tournament to which you are referring.

BTW, wish we would have been in Goodland this past weekend; would like to have seen a Norton - Garden City dual.

The format sounds like the Johnson County Classic format. Friday pools with the top 2 in each pool earning their way onto the bracket for Saturday. There is no hard luck bracket.

I also like this format.

This is the best HS tournament the Central US has this time of year. I can't believe teams in KS aren't lining up to get in this one.

Gardner and Eudora also utilize the pool and line bracket format. This does give your kids more mat time. Pursel is saying that the invitation committee will NOT take a partial team. If you don't have a full lineup or expect to have a full lineup they will not extend an invitation. They were full back in the spring this year. They turned away a Collinsville,OK team that has some tough kids in their lineup. I begged our coach to bail on the weak a$$ tournament known as the Johnson County Classic. No one gets better from six first period pins. Not even the kids who lost! He too is afraid of hanging a kid with 0-8 but what the heck, you get eight matches in one weekend against some solid competition. The JoCo Classic has declined every year the last four years. Heck some of these guys wrestle each other 6 times a year so lets blow it up and make these AD's and coaches go find some real competition.

I agree with Will and I'm sure the majority on this subject. The best learning/coaching opportunity Matt has had so far this year was a one point loss up in Nebraska against a state champ.
He is looking forward to a couple of tournaments coming up where he'll hopefully get to match up against some locally ranked wrestlers. If Kansas or whoever is stuck on having a local only tourney (JOCO Classic), I would propose it get opened up to a Eastern Kansas Classic adding teams like, Turner, Lawrence, Manhatten, Lansing etc.. That would toughen up the competition quite a bit. I would also like to see it moved as to not interfere with the KC Classic. Last weekend before League Championships would probably work for most.
Just my thoughts,

Terry Paxton

I don't really think your coach is way out of line. I do think that out of many teams from Kansas in this area, that SJA would be a team suitable to attend this tournament.

As for the comment about no one gets better from six first period pins, not everyone has a son on his way to being a four time state champ. Probably Ryne is only one of few who would have to worry about that.

Worrying about a kid going 0-8 at a mid-season tournament two months before state is a weak argument for not attending. Every person involved benefits from this type of competition. Win or lose, these types of tournaments are what accelerates the development of wrestlers and wrestling teams.

I think the comment about six first period pins is a two way street...neither kid gets better.

I think this relates to this topic. Did anybody notice that Park Hill, MO went to the Ironman tournament near Cleveland, OH. I thought MO also had similar restriction for traveling to large out of state tournaments. How did they pull that off?
