Mario Corado of Pittsburg got his 100th win early in the season. I think he is now 121-38 career and going. I may be wrong on the record, but I know he broke the 100th win mark. Congrats..

Has anyone hit this landmark as a junior? My sophomore has 68 in his first two years with tomorrow and state yet to come.

Dillon Salmans from Hoxie hit it last year as a junior. Not sure what hes at now. Also from hoxie, Dylan Bainter got his 100th win last week

I am pretty sure TJ Stokes of GE just hit it last weekend at the EKL.

Jr Dylan Schumacher of TMP now has a record of 103-3 as he surpsassed the 100 win mark at this past weekend's regoinal tournament.

I have a question. Everyone talks about the 100 wins, when I was in high school, it was a total of three years, and the average high school wrestler wrestled about 25 matches a year. So if you won every match you could only accumulate about 75 matches total. This was 1989. So if wrestlers are wrestling 40 to 50 matches per year now, that is about 200 matches, so really if you are getting your 100 win your senior year, you are only batting about 50 to 60%. I am not knocking anyone, but for us older guys, it is not an accurate comparison for kids today vs. kids in the past. Any feedback?

It seems like in Kansas, to make 100 wins in your sophomore year is tough to come by, although attainable. It seems most of the top wrestlers, barring injury or other mishaps, attain 100 wins near the end of their junior season. Looking up Missouri brackets, most of thier top placers have reached 100 by the end of their sophomore year. I wonder if it's the 5 match rule, or maybe less points that gets KS less matches. From scanning KS HS brackets for state, I don't see that many kids nearing 50-40 matches for the season. I am curious what the average is, seems like their are a lot of 30ish match seasons going into state.

100 wins though during a kids career is something they can be proud of. Lots of ups and downs during that quest, and something that probably gave them lots of life lessons along the path. Congrats to those wrestlers who attain this achievement!

Bronson - What I learned when we transferred from West to East is that in Western Kansas you had a lot more individual "duals" and less tournament or dual tournament events. Because of the point system, that affords you less matches. Duals were the "norm" in the past, but because of the point system structure that is imposed, the coaches that want their wrestlers to get more matches are trending away form the traditional duals. My son has received an ungodly amount of "byes" this year that do not count toward his record, and he has still competed in 45 matches already with a possibly of 2 to 5 left at state giving him 47 to 50 matches for the year. When we were out west, he finished the state tournament with a total of 38 matches.

Great to hear your perspective, especially from coming out west to the east. I always liked Wills proposal to add points for duals. Good for raising a fan base, and just out right fun to attend.

I understand coaches wanting to make the most of their points though to get matches. I think SJA, along with some other schools, Baldwin for instance, attend some of the Missouri, or out if state tourneys, that give them lots of good matches. I've just always assumed, mainly from following some of these schools, that's why wrestlers from these teams usually end near the 50 match area, such as your son.

I would thing this is a good thing, barring chances for injury. I am still associated with kids wrestling so I guess my questions is: Do attending these out of state tourneys, with no 5 match rule help our wrestlers more? Or at least give them better experience with different opponents? Something schools closer to the borders can take advantage of, compared to those schools more centrally located.

I guess coming from coaching kids, we've always tried to get as many matches at the toughest kids tourneys to help our wrestlers grow. We still give them some breaks during the season, but even with some weekends off, at this point in our kids season, most of our wrestlers are around 40-50 matches with a month and a half to go. Are we wrong with that mindset? The kids I am talking about are jr high aged wrestlers, anxious to wrestle at the HS level. Thoughts?

The five (5) match rule is a National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) rule. In order for all states to be in compliance with the National Federation competition rules, they must follow the five (5) match rule. The out of state tournements in which Saint James Academy participated are all compliant members and do follow the five (5) match rule. The key to obtaining more matches is to attend several two day tournaments which provide pool competition with five (5) matches on Friday and an additional five (5) matches on Saturday, or in the alternative, a pool tournament on Saturday which allows for all participants the potential to wrestle five (5) matches.

The actual rule is:
Rule 1, Section 2, Article 2 (page 6)
No wrestler shall represent the school in more than one weight class in any meet or compete in more than five matches (championship or consolation), including forfeits in any one day.

I don't like the part where a forfeit counts to your match total (although I know it counts as a win), it just doesn't sound right.
