Last year, our Cadet Duals team went to Rochester Minnesota to compete. The wrestlers were charged $450 each on top of what the state chipped in to fund the trip. This year, against a lot of complaints, the Cadet duals was moved to Daytona Florida. We have looked into airfare, then renting vans, etc, and would probably have to charge at least $850-900 per kid to make that work. Or if we chartered a bus, it would probably be a similar amount charged per kid. Another option would be to charge approx. $650 per kid and take three 15 passenger vans. We would have camp from Saturday June 11th thru Monday morning (at Andale if need be) June 13th, and leave Monday mid to late morning. Drive halfway or so, spend the night, then finish the drive in time for weighins on Tuesday June 14th. We would wrestle Tuesday, Wed, Thurs, Fri, and the placement duals would take place on Saturday. We would drive part way back on Saturday, then finish the drive and arrive home late on Sunday evening. The amount of time the kids would be gone is pretty much the same, just more travel time, and less camp time.

Another option would be, in an effort to both save money, and send a message to the folks that moved the venue, is to take a Cadet roster to Oklahoma City for the Junior Duals, which are June 23-27th. This would probably only cost about $350 per kid. Hopefully we wouldn’t have anyone back down from the challenge of wrestling older kids, and still be able to fill a roster. It would be nice and close at OKC, so more parents could go and watch. But it would also be brutal, even more so than a typical schoolboy or Cadet duals trip. It would be an excellent learning experience for the kids. I have no doubt that we can still find some success, it will just be harder. It would also prepare them for the following year, when they are a true Junior aged kid.

So what I’d like is to hear feedback from potential CADET kids/parents only, as to what they would prefer.

Options:
A-Fly to florida, rent vans, spend $850-900 per kid to send them to Cadet Duals
B-Charter a bus, spend $850-900 per kid to send them to Daytona for Cadet Duals
C-Take three 15 passenger vans, spend $650 approximately to send them to Daytona for Cadet Duals
D-Take a Cadet team to OKC for Junior Duals, and spend approximately $350 per kid.

No matter what Team Kansas does, count Levi in. We’ll scrounge up the money for the expensive trip, or go to OKC and get it on with the Juniors. Now, let’s hear some feedback.

Thanks
Doug

Those costs to the wrestlers are subsidized somewhat by USAWKS? If it's all out of pocket to the wrestlers I would say go to OKC. If USAWKS is contributing to hold the cost down for each wrestler, take those monies and apply them to Fargo in an attempt to increase attendance at Cadet Nationals.

The $450 per kid last year was in addition to what the state kicked in. I assume the $350 to go to okc would be after the state chips in as well. Russ Hermreck could probably confirm that.

Breaking down the input so far:

Will do whatever anyone else will do, confirmed no matter what-2 kids' parents
Jarud Johnson
Levi Eck

Go to OKC, take it on the chin, but good experience-1 kid's parent
Tagen Lambotte

Go to Florida-zero so far

I'll keep tabs from private message, emails, texts, and comments on this forum.

The duals event is so valuable, experience wise, in my mind, that we need to take a team somewhere, be it OKC or FLA.

I think whomever was responsible for the decision to move the duals out of the central part of the U.S. needs to be made to see how it impacts attendance. I could be wrong but I believe there will be many states in the same shape as Kansas.

From what I hear, there were several states talking of a boycott, but they all caved in and decided to go. Kansas has to make a decision as well.

I think we stand on our principles and refuse to go. Otherwise we are in effect telling them we don't care where they move it or how much it costs in the future.

A few years ago I think the state of Florida started boycotting Jr. Duals and created the Disney ones the same week. How about we create a Sunflower Cadet Dual Championships, and get all the surrounding states and maybe some from out West to come to Kansas and work out something? Just a thought.

I like this idea! We could have it at Hartman Arena and show the visiting cadets where Wild West World used to be right across the highway.

Parker Howell is interested in going. I think the best bet is to do cadet and juniors both for those financially and physically able. The more quality mat time the better.

I'm getting lots of "lets go to FLorida" until they hear what it will cost. I think we will need to just take a team of Cadets to Junior Duals.

I think we need to go ahead and make that call, so we know what to tell kids.

I agree. Many parents will say they are going right up to the last minute when it becomes clear they can't afford the additional costs. Besides, if we follow the line of thinking used by many on this board that a higher level of the competition will only make us better, why would we consider anything different?

The main reason to consider something different is many of the lighter weight cadets will be left out without the opportunity to improve. With that being said, We will do whatever is decided by the collective leadership.
