I agree! An inadvertant whistle? The ref forgot the rules in OT?

EXACTLY! you would think in Regionals the ref would know the OT rules and know that the 2 OT's following the initial OT are not sudden death

it was the 3rd OT and the BVW wrestler was on bottom trying to escape after holding down the SMNW from escaping...with about 18 seconds remaining the BVW escpaed and I guess he assumed it was sudden death so when he escaped he ran around in victory thinking the match was over the ref who SHOULD know the rules blew his whistle which was like a little tweet...the SMNW coaches screamed at the SMNW wrestler to go at the BVW wrestler cause the match was not over...the SMNW wrestler ran over picked up the BVW wrestler and with about 2 seconds remaining scored a takedown as time expired...the ref signaled the takedown and the victory for the SMNW wrestler...the BVW coaches called the ref over and ref overturned the call and had 18 seconds put back on the clock and the takedown to be taken away making the score 7-6 for the BVW wrestler and the BVW wrestler was able to hang on and win the match

Sounds to me like this ref needs a little lesson in how OT works.

Because of the number of officials needed to work regionals, its often "all hands on deck."

Officials for state are selected based upon the number of coaches/administrators' votes for that official.

Inadvertent whistles happen, at all levels, in all sports. The OP rules aren't complicated but the double 30 second tiebreakers don't happen often (I had one this year). I remind the kids to keep wrestling at the beginning of each b/c I expect them to think its sudden death (and it reminds me).
