Now that Kids State is over, when do we start talking about the High School rankings for 2011-2012?

Ok, for next year: I would like to congratulate coach Mike Medina of SJA for NOT winning not only Coach of the year, but at the very least not even being the Regional Coach of the Year.
Obviously he had two wrestlers that had earned their stripes, but where do you even think all those other points came from????? They came from wrestlers that BEGAN their wrestling career just a few years ago. THATS COACHING!
I feel almost guilty for my son being at SJA to see how little Coach Medina was respected by the "voting" wrestling community. Coach Medina, thank you for giving Taylor the opportunity and the skills to be a 3X state champion and D-1 recruit!!

A simple question: What other coach finished 1st at regionals two years in a row without winning regional coach of the year? How many coaches have started a program from scratch and I mean a bare cupboard in 2007, one wrestler in 2008, and wins a regional championship in 2010 and 2011 finsihes 4th out of 60 schools in 2011 at state. That is called building a program. All anyone had to do was look at Zach Pollom as a FR who had never seen a wrestling match before and then watch him make his way to the state finals just three years later and they would have given him coach of the year without even thinking of anyone else. Honestly, the whole COY is kind of a joke. You can only win if you are a member of KWCA?? The officials award a COY too. What is that for, never tabling an official or being super nice at the table?? Honestly, can we just have a real award with some critieria? I personally go with those who get the most out of nothing or a little. If you have a core of returning qualifiers and placers and you get 3rd, isn't that just doing what is expected? Just like OW, either make the award ojective with some data and put a committee together to determine the winner. Make all coaches eligible.
In closing, Coach Medina is my Coach of the Year, no one else in 4A took one of their wrestlers to the top of the podium four years in a row. Thank you Mike for all of those hours early in the morning, after school, on the road, in the summer and away from your family. Ryne wouldn't have been able to do it with anyone else in his corner.

Many coaches are deserving. What is the point in even arguing about this. If you always need an award for doing what your supposed to than you are in it for the wrong reasons.

Then why have the awards? Point is if you are going to have them. Make them meaningful and credible. If not then I agree don't have them. Let's not keep score either then.

Some statistics on SJA wrestling (all years under Mike Medina) six seasons- (i believe only five of varsity) 19 state qualifiers 9 state placing finishes -7 state titles -1 state runner-up -1 fifth place finisher 3 top 10 finishes at state (10th in 2009, 8th in 2010, 4th in 2011)

the majority of the above stats come from cokeley and moeder. coach medina will need to continue to prove himself for the next few years.
i really could care less, and doubt that coach medina could either. but look at it like this, to call him the best coach of all time right now, after having moeder and cokeley is kind of like calling joe montana the best qb of all time, after having rice, taylor, jones, clark, craig, and rathman.
did rice and company make montana the best of all time, or vice versa. we only had to wait a couple of years and see steve young have the same success, to make up our minds. coach medina will continue to have success, and the awards will come. time will tell, maybe it's just too early.

I understand that you are frustrated with Coach Medina not getting recognized for the outstanding job that he is doing, but you still cannot downgrade the job that the coaches who won the award did. In 4A the coach that won was very deserving: Taking 6 kids to state and placing 6 kids at state is pretty outstanding if you ask me. Also the Holt kid from Abilene that was the 4A state Champ at Heavyweight BEGAN wrestling as a SOPHOMORE! I can understand your frustration with the selection process, but that needs to be brought up with the KWCA. I just think that it is unfair to lackluster the performances that the COY's were awarded for.

Will, I believe Coach Johnson up in Norton won regionals the past two years without being awarded the Regional Coach of the Year.

I am sure they just figured Billy's trophy case was already full. I am sure he has been named that several times as well as COY. Coach Medina has not been named either, ever. In addition, I am sure Norton was expected to win both years and that supports my stance of overperforming to get the award, not just doing what was expected. Coach Johnson should be the 321A Coach of the Decade for 2000-2010. Do they have that award??

Aren't these awards voted on by other coaches. I don't know a better criteria than to be picked out of a group by your peers. Actually other coaches are the ones that know the score.

I might have some criteria on Jilka when he was coach but the cops might want to get involved.

In my opinion, coaching honors at tourney's like league and regionals are often an after thought. It seems most coaches just choose the winning teams coach. As was said earlier, I think the coach who surprises, builds and improves is sometimes more worthy that the winning teams coach. It's more impressive to me to take kids with 2-3 years experience and turn them into SQ!
Heck, at the ONW 6A Regional, one school turned their ballot in at the seeding meeting!!!!
