Individual Tournament Format
Minnesota won back-to-back national titles in 2001 and '02 and also has four ... 80 All-America honors, including a school-record 10 All-Americans in 2001
The top-ranked University of Minnesota wrestling team won its third NCAA Championship since 2001 on Saturday night at the Palace in Auburn Hills, Mich. The Golden Gophers clinched the team race following back-to-back losses by Iowa State wrestlers in the 184- and 197-pound title matches. In the final bout of the tournament, heavyweight Cole Konrad concluded his stellar collegiate career with a pin of Penn State's Aaron Anspach in the finals. Konrad became the fourth two-time national champion in school history. Minnesota finished with 98.0 points, while Iowa State finished second with 88.5.
"I think the true character of a team is when you get yourself in a hole and you have to dig yourself out," head coach J Robinson. "They responded when they had to and that's what champions do. This was a team win. All nine guys contributed to this and that's the beauty of this victory."

John Smith Oklahoma State 2011/12 on this years season. “All you ever hope for is to have that opportunity. You’re not hoping to win a national championship – instead, you can kind of control your destiny by what you have, and I think we’re in that position right now,” Smith said. “I’m not in the hope mode that things work out, I’m in a pretty good position to be thinking, ‘I need to control our destiny of where we finish.’ You’re not always in that position and I feel like I’m in it now. I think we can control what we do over this season at a very challenging time when there’s several good teams out there.” Brands raises bar for Hawkeye wrestlers http://www.siouxcityjournal.com/sports/w...5c83d2d461.html

Sanderson insists he and his brothers want to give them something that he has never accomplished as a competitor or a coach: a team title. “It’s the mark of a program, and it shows that you got a group of guys together and they shared in a common goal,” he said. “It’s something I have missed. I don’t only want one of them. I want a bunch of them like the University of Iowa. I believe I’m in the right place for that to happen.”

Coaches - Team concept. Wrestlers - Individual concept. Weren't the coaches former wrestlers? Is this team concept something that just automatically comes with age or with the job?

Last time I checked, there was no I in Team. I like to think of a wrestling team as a Band of Brothers. You don't have to be a Champion to be a Champion. You just have to be part of something special, like a cohesive team, to be special.

There is a Me in team though, and it happens when the whistle blows and you are alone on the mat with no teammates.

That is why wrestling, in my opinion, is the toughest sport one can compete in. If you screw up, you don't have anyone to cover your back. If you pull off an upset, no one helped you do it. Wrestling is very much an individual sport, but I love it in the team concept.

Coaches - Team concept. Wrestlers - Individual concept. Weren't the coaches former wrestlers? Is this team concept something that just automatically comes with age or with the job? It comes with the job - the concept changes. Your responsibilities are now different. RE: You are part of a sales team of 10 and paid by commission - you earn your own pay. You and one other are excellent salesmen while 2 others are average at best, and the other 6 hardly sell anything. It doesnt change how you work or prepare individually, you continue to strive to be the best you can be. Suddenly you are promoted to Sales manager and are on salary. All at once the performance of the others as a "Team" of salesman becomes extremely important and your job depends on it. Your performance review is based on your groups TOTAL sales, and having one champion salesman left in the team isnt going to impress your superiors. You do everything you can to get everyone on your team above average and you are successful, AND your job is secure. Yes, you change positions and your concept will change as well.
