The night must have been over in 30 minutes--5 forfiets and 1 open class out of 14 classes. Maybe they should combine 5A and 6A.

A light dual no doubt. But to jump to the conclusion that equals that we need to combine 5a and 6a, is completely uneducated.

Looking at the pre-season rankings for a barometer.

Here are the number of ranked wrestlers,
6a 26%
5a 27%
4a 34%
3,2,1a 13%

If you look at the #1 rankings
6a has 4
5a has 4
4a has 2
3,2,1a has 2

So by your logic if you combine 5a/6a. you have over 50% of the top wrestlers in one class and over 70% of the #1 ranked kids in one class. This comes up every year, and it always come back to the fact 5a and 6a have a large number of the top kids, 4a is always the deepest with strong kids and 3,2,1a has some great individuals but struggles with overall numbers.

I would be fine with combining 5a/6a into one class AND combining 4a/321a into another. That would give you almost a 50/50 weighting of ranked wrestlers. Heck for that matter let's combine them all and only have one class for wrestling like California. But all of this has nothing to do with fixing the dual you are talking about. They would have still have 5 forfiets and open. For that we need a whole different conversation about participation in HS wrestling. Large schools struggle many times because there are so many options in larger areas, and small schools stuggle with have enough kids to start with.

Been thru this topic umpteen times--every year. Was not serious about combing the classes. This is a problem in all classes, 1A--6A. But something has to happen in HS wrestling to get more kids out and on the mats. This time of the year give the wrestlers an up or down bracket slot say plus or minus 3 lbs, or have the wrestlers wrestle up or down a weight class, what ever, but get the wrestlers some mat time. Lots of good, better, best tournaments around the season opening---hurts to miss some good early season mat time.
