I would be OK with a game of cards. How about Slap Jack?

This is the exact thread to have those discussions. Both wrestlers had their parents chime in!

This may be the place, but we were getting NOWHERE fast! I was just trying to "lighten the mood". Neither one of you were really looking at the others point. Even the flawed BCS rankings look only at this year. Last year is history, BUT sometimes you gotta go with your gut and make an educated "guess"! LOL, if we left it up to the parents to decide...... I'll put my $$$ on Momma Henes over Cokeley, in Slap Jack, Billiards, or anything else you decide!

Your "last year is history" comment falls apart in seeding meetings. If a kid took 2nd at state vs. a kid that took 3rd at state and there was NO OTHER CURRENT YEAR CRITERIA, the runner-up is seeded higher!

One thing I've learned about high school wrestling this time around is that there is way too much importance put on wins, losses and rankings in wrestling. Don't get me wrong, I still will be in the stands cheering loudly for Luke (and Aquinas), nervous as heck and I naturally want him to win, but it's just a wrestling match. Wrestling doesn't define who he is....

I'm much more concerned about his academic class rank...that opens college doors!

Sharon,

My son is smarter than your son:-) Actually, you know that I think the world of your family. You do bring up a great point though. Some of these high school wrestlers, as good as they are, will be better served scoring good grades in the classroom than scoring points on the mat. Congrats to STA for winning the Johnson County Tournament.

You still don't listen. I stated that sometimes you have to go with an educated guess. Trust me I am not taking sides. I pointed out the root of both arguments.

Smokey's answer to the question "who's the better wrestler today?" is the wrestler who is on a roll right now! last year is past tense.

When all else fails, you rely on the last possible thing to go to, which is last year's history. If that's your answer to the question "who's the better wrestler today?" that my friend is an educated guess.

I heard you both times. But instead of going with a gut feeling, you just read the numbers 2 vs. 3 at state last year and choose 2!

Thanks to all the coaches and Richard Salyer for posting results or sending them to me. I still plan to post the rankings tomorrow. They will not be on the KWCA site till Kramer returns, either Thursday or Friday.

The InterMat and wrestlingreport D1 college rankings.
Quentin Wright and Kevin Steinhaus – These are some college rankings
Steinhaus (#8 in both rankings) has a head to head win this year over Wright (#5 or #4) depending what ranking you look at
Here is an example of a national champion from last year at the same weight He started the year ranked number 1 – now he has a couple of losses but not head to head losses with all the guys ranked above him. There are some “commons” from this year but not all “commons”. So it appears to me the ranker is looking at the body of work from this year also and who is on and who is off a little.
You would think Steinhaus with a head to head win over Wright would be ranked ahead of him. But Steinhaus has some other losses on the year even though he has a win over the defending national champion from the 2010/11 season.

SO TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT HEAD-TO-HEAD IS NOT USED IN MAKING A RANKING OR SNAP SHOT IN TIME AND/OR WHO IS WRESTLING WELL A PARTICULAR TIME OF THE YEAR.

One other important note Steinhaus losses this year are all to top 10 ranked guys.
Ben Bennet 1 point loss
Chris Perry 1 point loss
Steve Bosak

Quentin’s 2 losses this year are against
#1 Ranked Robert Hamlin - Lehigh
#8 Ranked Kevin Steinhaus Minnesota

RANK - Intermat
1) Robert Hamlin Lehigh
Junior
2) Chris Perry Oklahoma State
Sophomore
3) Joe LeBlanc Wyoming
Senior
4) Steve Bosak Cornell
Junior
5) Quentin Wright Penn State 7-2
Junior

Wrestlingreport D1 Ranking
184:
1) Robert Hamlin-Lehigh-Jr
2) Joe LeBlanc-Wyoming-Sr
3) Steve Bosak-Cornell-Sr
4) Quentin Wright-Penn State-Jr
5) Chris Perry-Oklahoma State-So
6) Ryan Loder-Northern Iowa-So
7) Ben Bennett-Central Michigan-Jr
8) Kevin Steinhaus-Minnesota-So

So I think I have a little knowledge of the sport and by no means do I think I know it all.
But I do think it is important to pass this information on to the person who is ranking your kids from week to week. Again a ranking is a snap shot in time and who is wrestling well at that time of the year - and using the current data. If there were 5 kids all undefeated with wins over top ten guys they could all be tied for #1. That doesn't normally happen and we as students of the sport look at the scores of matches, pins, T-falls, shutouts, losses, etc.,

Good example and I appreciate the info.

As I've stated before, I am entirely impressed with the wrestler you are speaking of and in fact, have him ranked above a wrestler that beat him at state while not meeting him this year.

The Bobcat will probably shake a few things out.

My kid beat the #1 ranked kid at 138 when they were 9 years old, shouldn't that come into the equation somewhere here.......? I haven't slept since the last all class rankings came out, worrying about the fact that there were lots of people who didn't respect my kid enough. Every day I tell him "keep worrying about those rankings, boy, they are all that matter"

Doug,I remember that match with Levi and Konnor. Levi definently deserves the #1 ranking at 138!! I thought he was heavier though. wink
