If they get any of the brackets full with only 15 teams there, I will freak out! That would be something.

What is the world coming to in 4A? Yea, so much for the whole 3A/4A is so much tougher than 5A/6A thing because of these monster 2 day regionals with these monster 16 man brackets.

Changes would be great. Cut it back to 12 weight classes. Shorter tournaments, better competition, schools like mine that have 300 kids can compete with other 4A schools that have 500-700. I am all for changes. Get it done if you can.

Finally, someone brings up the real discrepancy in high school. Too many weight classes, and uneven weight classes. We have a few weights in the middle that are insane, and then we have, lets just say "other ones". 14 is a big number.

Too many weight classes is not the problem. If we could get more kids involved during the Kids' Federation season, then more would wrestle in high school and we would see less open weight classes.
I also understand the challenge of keeping them wrestling. Just because you start at a young age, it doesn't automatically mean that you will continue into your high school years. Why do kids drop out of wrestling if they start at an early age? Some aren't cut out for the sport, others burn out, and others choose to do something different. The key is, get more kids to experiment at an early age, and even with the ones that wash out for one reason or another, you will have more wrestling in high school.

More kids wrestling would be great. Send them to Junior Varsity tournaments to get ready to wrestle varsity. 12 weight classes would still make the competition better and shorten up tournaments.

Time for some changes! Incent the teams to bring full rosters... In my opinion the scoring is not fair if we are really going to use an individual tournament to declare a team champion. In these regionals there should only be ONE BYE and the rest should be declared OPEN. What does this mean? You draw in the teams OPEN WEIGHTS just like unseeded wrestlers. If a SJA wrestler draws an OPEN instead of the single BYE he is awarded two advancement points and two bonus points just like a fall, just like it happens in a dual. It is CRAP that teams are denied a chance to earn bonus points because coaches don't walk the hallways and pull in the participants. Being a wrestling coach isn't usually a single hat job. You have to be a fund raiser, marketer, counselor, parent advisor, teacher abiter, etc. Seriously though, there is NO REASON a 4A school cannot field 10 wrestlers at a minimum. The schools in the metro areas are confronted with lots of other options and imo most of the kids are getting soft and their parents are letting them but that is where being a good salesman comes into play.
