Watch the last seven seconds of this match which has an exciting ending. Give me your opinion if this is a takedown or not and pay attention to the timer. This is a state finals with an nationally ranked kid, so a lot on the line. Either way, you really couldn't get a tougher call for a referee.

I would say no takedown. Walker (in green) had Molloy on the mat with 1 second on the clock HOWEVER he did not have control of Molloy around both legs or around the torso which is pretty much standard for a folkstyle takedown, and Molloy had Walker's arms tied inside. It was close but after the officials consulted they got the call right which was no takedown.

I'd have scored it two. He looks like he has it as time runs out. For me, a tie goes to the aggressor. The red kid was stalling, backing up, avoiding contact. He got taken down at the buzzer. He's on his butt, the other kid is on top I understand the argument that he hasn't wrapped him up, close.

Bob,

I would say that if indeed this was a "tie" then no true takedown existed and thus not awarded.

Unfortunately (depending on your point of view) the rule book does not make exceptions to its wording or interpretations of scoring manuevers based on the conditions or situations such as those that you mentioned. In other words you don't get the close calls simply because another situation exists. If the kid was stalling, backing up, and/or avoiding contact then he should have been penalized appropriately for that action. To give a competitor a score that was not achieved properly because of those other situations violates the very essence of the rules.

Now as far as the attempted takedown itself. The easiest way to think about this is ... would that exact same position and situation be called a takedown 30 seconds into the 1st period? If you can't say 100% yes to that, then what happened at the end of that match wasn't a takedown.

Just my personal opinion.

I think the only reason I wouldn't call it a TD is I would like to see if Walker (green) stops Molloy's momentum from rolling/ or scrambling out of the position. I agree if in the middle of a period and you have the luxury of more time, any ref would wait to see how it plays out. It looks like after the buzzer, Molloy's momentum was stopped and didn't roll through. Unfortunately, it's not like football when the buzzer goes off you have time to finish the play, and can't call it that way.

This is a sweet firemans, but in a firemans takedown like this, Molloy (red) grabs Walkers (green) head and has it tucked under. Does it matter if he pops his head out or not before you call it a two? In my opinion, I don't think it does matter.

Good point on not wrapping arms around legs or body, but the way they landed on top, Walkers legs have Molloy's legs wrapped so I think that establishes control.
