When I was in high school, like many kids, my dream was to meet and get Dan Gable's autograph. A team member and his dad asked me to go with them to Iowa City to watch Iowa State and Iowa, #1 and #2 in the country, wrestle in a dual. Excited to get this chance I wasn't about to miss out. The dual was a good one, but Iowa came out on top. My friend dad was very patient with us, and stayed in the seats while him and I got many of the wrestlers autographs. When we finally made our way to Coach Gable, he was talking, of course, to many different people on his success. We stood right beside him for about a half hour, hoding the items we wanted signed, and every once in a while we would extend our arms toward him in the gesture for him to sign. Finally, with a bit of irritation in his voice, he looked at me and said "go on, I don't have time". After not getting his autograph, and the way he talked to me, I never forgave him. In my mind, he didn't understand what that meant to me.
I read this article this morning and it changed my mind about him, and all is forgiven. For those of you who don't know his whole life story, you will really find it interesting.
