Some ideas from William Scherr

YOUTH WRESTLING IDEAS:
1) Put the kids on teams immediately like soccer and football...have meets each week that are short and easy for parents to attend and for the kids to join. Match them up according to ability and experience so kids don't get murdered.
2)Make it about fun and participation and not about training for the Olympics from day one. Give awards for skills and physical activity not only for winning matches.
3) Make the sport fun for young kids. Re-educate our coaches so that they understand fundamentals of making practices fun and educational and not about "the cream rising to the top!"
4) Give kids and parents intermediate awards for success and advancement in technique and physical skills not only for winning tournaments.
THE POINT IS...WE CANNOT AND SHOULD NOT EXPECT ALL OF THESE KIDS TO PARTICIPATE ONLY FOR THE COMPETITION. WE MUST OPEN OUR SPORT UP TO FUN, FITNESS AND SOCIAL ENJOYMENT. THIS WILL BROADEN OUR BASE OF ATHLETES AND WILL EXPAND OUR POPULARITY. THOSE THAT WANT WILL RISE TO THE TOP AND BE OUR NEXT OLYMPIANS. THE OTHERS WILL BECOME FANS. EVERYONE WINS.
