Trackwrestling is wonderful, but I like they way Derby's program provides team results showing how many placers per team.

As a tournament progresses, There used to be a way to see how many wrestlers from each team were on front side and or back side.

Goddard placed 13. Solid work.

Looks to me like there needs to be a new team a top the rankings in 5A. And before you St James fans start....I know you were missing 3 studs...but three kids do not equal more than 100 points.

Four wrestlers do though... smile

126 - Cokeley - likely 2nd
132 - Hensley - likely 1st
160 - Vanlerberg - likely 1st
170 - Pratt - likely 1st

If they finished there, GD would have less points.

Being a Goddard fan, I would be the first to say that they are dang good. They have narrowed the gap tremendously and have a legit shot at a 5A state title. Those top five in 5A are tight.

Narrowed the gap? They beat St.James by 110 points....that's not narrowing the gap that's winning....

T Hensley placed 4th. How many MORE would have 1st got them?

If Dickman from MV wrestles SJA doesnt see finals at 138.

IF??

We can play this game all day.

And we do... except we don't "play" wrestling.

Three champions and a finalist is 95ish points. Draining 15 from GD because of those four and we have a classic example of narrowing.

Sorry coach. You missed it.

"Game" in the sentence above refers to the "if" game we were playing not the actual wrestling match.

No coffee yet?

Remember this when you are comparing team results...

The 5A rankings are a 5A state tournament scenario. They do not include Derby or Olathe North who placed 2nd and 7th respectively at the Derby invite.

As we speak, I am finishing the 5A rankings. I have not added up the team points yet. I can't wait to see either! smile

Its easy to say what could have, would have, and should have happened. There is a lot I don't know, would St. Thomas have made the standings change? Probably. If all teams have had all of their varsity athletes available, would the standings change? Probably. If it were only 5A schools would things be different? Sure. But here is what I do Know... A lot of top 5A schools were at the Derby Invite.... They brought the best squads they had available at the time.... Goddard won very convincingly.... I'm not saying they will win state, but they are the favorites at this point based on their body of work. You don't have to get creative to prove a point.... Good points prove themselves... Congrats Goddard, well done.

Alot of questions should be answered this weekend at The BOBCAT. Both teams will be there and should be at full force. I will say this...Goddard is the Team to Beat!!!

Looking at the 5A rankings, SJA has six ranked as finalists. Goddard has two. That's about a 50 point difference for them to make up on the backside. Now they do have four ranked in that backside final to SJA's one. That's about a 30 point comeback. Then add Goddard's three fifth place guys to SJA's one fifth.... and you have a good ole battle looming!!!

Be there in Wichita! I will be cheering for ALL the best kids to reach their goals!

What happens this weekend will only matter if it is head-to-head between 5A opponents or if there are some commons. With Collinsville, Blue Springs, Platte County and other non KS 5A teams in the mix it will be tough to determine team ranking changes. Remember, last year Seamen won the Bobcat but placed 5th at state behind both SJA and STA.

One thing I will predict... KS kids will be wrestling for 2nd at 106, 138, 160, and 195...

Some Goddard up weight wrestlers scored big points that they will not score at the state tournament. The competition mix is completely different. Goddard is the team to beat next year and probably the year after but Ark City has some good young wrestlers coming in.
