Every year KSHSAA randomly draws the brackets after regionals and some of the best match ups happen on Friday instead of Saturday.

One example this year:

5A 145 - Olsen and Ellis in the semis

This leads to some wrestlers placing 2nd that wouldn't have a prayer against the 3rd placer.

Is this a big deal or not?

Should we advocate for a true second or not? Why?

For subsequent seeding criteria there should NOT be emphasis placed on state finalist but on the TOP 3. Both the 2nd and 3rd placer had one loss at state.

Back to Friday vs Saturday match ups. Some coaches would prefer to wrestle a tough match on Friday instead of Saturday... It is a long season and keeping your weight down for a SHOULDER TO SHOULDER weigh in on-site sometimes breaks a wrestler. Some wrestlers prefer a warm up match or two before a big one. Saturday is a long day to think about just one match for all of the marbles. smile What are some thoughts and views on this?

True second is a patch that I would vote for. Common sense seeding using the rankings & head to head & common opponents would be the best way.

Very easy fix. A true wrestle back for 2nd / 3rd. if you make it to the semi's, lose, get thrid you get to wrestle other finalist for 2nd. How many times would this happen? My guess..... 5 to 6 times in each class.

True 2nd is not the answer. One wrestler just lost and is down the other just won and is on a high. This is absolutely not fair to the one that got 2nd.
The best idea that I have heard is to have 2 super regions and the top 8 go to state. That way if the 2 best kids are at the same region they would be 1st and 2nd and would be separated at state. If they were at different regions each one should take 1st and they would be separated at state.

Eight wrestlers is plenty at state for 5A and 6A. This would help us rejoin 4A and possibly 321A for a building tournament. I don't want to go look at every bracket but I saw several losing records. Qualifying half the wrestlers is overdoing it.

That was not the topic! Have an 8 man bracket... A 16 man bracket... Combine 5A and 6A... Combine all classes I really don't care. But you asked about favorable draws. Having only 2 qualifying tournaments fixes that problem.

How about start with seeding as we do today, 4 groups of 4 wrestlers - each from a different regional. Then, simply seed the groups considering only the #1's.

This would prevent 2 standouts from being on the same side and not change the current system dramatically (adding another match). It still would not be a perfect answer, but would reduce the need for this discussion.

In 5A you only have 2 teams west of I-35. Liberal, and Great Bend. The rest are all on the line or East. 32 teams in 5A. That makes for 2, 16 man brackets, if you go to 2 regionals, either make it an 8 man, or 16 man, bracket at State. Being in the Wichita area saw some QUALITY boys being left home, and some making it in other regions who wouldn't make it otherwise.

Colorado seeds their state tournament by looking at the numbers ones 1st. Returning state points is the #1 criteria followed by head to head and so forth. They then seed the #2s by state points and making sure they are on opposite sides of their Regionals #1s. Then the rest is seeded if and only if they have state points from the past if not they are seeded based on their number ones and twos. This process works out really well and is not hard to do. CHSAA does all of the seeding with no arguments from the coaches.

Not that we should do things like Colorado, but they also place top 6 wrestlers at Regionals and they wrestler back for a true 4th ensuring the best four wrestlers go. This also helps when injuries and ineligibles happen, the number 5 from the same regional replaces the missing wrestler. This makes sure there are never byes at the state tournament.
