First of all I hope everyone got home safe either last night or today from Salina.

I need clarification from Salina Wrestling Club regarding how they set up their brackets. How do you determine A and B?

My kid was sent in as an "A" wrestler - was placed in the "B" bracket. When we questioned Salina tournament people Friday night we were told that the other kids in the bracket were all "A" wrestlers except for 1 kid who was a "B". Well, with a total of 12 kids in my sons bracket entered in the tournament I find that hard to believe. Also, if all the kids were "A" wrestlers, except one, why not put them in one sixteen man bracket?

Unfortunately, two of the kids from the "A" bracket were kids we don't normally see in local tournaments - that is the point of traveling to tournaments outside your district! My son ended up wrestling two boys from our district that we see nearly every weekend and one we haven't seen yet. This is the second year in a row that this has happened.

Does anyone know why Salina brackets like this? This will help make the decision whether we try it again next year!

I would like to add that the tournament overall ran very smoothly, concession prices were reasonable, seating was comfortable. Pictures took too long but I think I was in more of a rush to get on the road!

I agree. I don't understand how Salina set up the brackets. My son is a 2nd year wrestler entered as a C or so. Of course he met one the Mo. Competitors who he had just met at a previous meet. They were one of the top teams in Mo. last year. It would be nice to know before you travel that far that they would be matched with equal talent. There were obviously also other wrestlers like my son with much less experience in his 15 man bracket. [/LIST]

with the bigger tournaments like Salina, Wichita etc.. wrestlers should submit their current record with notable wins and how they placed at the larger tournaments the year before. That way they could avoid having the 2 best wrestlers meet too early.
Several weights had wrestlers that were seeded 1 and 2 who had never placed at Salina while previous place winners were meeting in the first or second round

If you are concerned about you son wrestling someone who is probably his talent level perhaps you should enter him in novice tournaments instead of big tournys like Salina. Tournaments are really set up so that everyone is equal, this isn't stock car racing. The only way to get better is wrestle kids better than you

A "championship" tournament has multiple brackets per weight?

Sportsfan02, a great question. I asked the question on another forum if the Salina TOC is a qualifier for the national TOC. If it is it makes your question even more valid. There is also some discussion on this topic on the Ratings page for those that are interested.

On the topic of getting your kid exposed to some different wrestlers, we have found a solution. We normally wrestle in Div. II around Wichita. Therefore, my son sees the same people week after week. Although this is good because the district is very strong in his age/weight bracket, it also gets a little boring. Sooooo, this week we are traveling about 225 miles northwest to visit District IV. Not sure how he'll do, but we know he will be seeing someone different for a change. We even considered a trip to Florida this year to wrestle, but we couldn't find a tournament at a convenient time.
Bottom line: If you want variety, you need to travel.

We did travel - to Salina - requiring an overnight stay. That is one of the two main points in my first post. Later on this season we will travel to Wichita as well as Manhattan.

I would really like to get a response from someone with Salina Wrestling Club regarding my original post. I would just like to know how they go about determining if a weight class should have 2 brackets. Otherwise I thought that the tournament was well run and the facility was great!

My son wrestled in The 2004 Tournament of Champions at 12/100. I was wondering if anyone could let me know how to get in touch with the photographer who took the pictures of the medalists. We left in a hurry, due to the weather, and did not get the order forms.

Thanks in advance.

It was Lifetouch Publishing I believe. They have an office in K.C. I think this group was out of Wichita, Salina, or Hutch though. That's all I can remember. Not that it helps but it is usually the same group that does state.
