Make no mistake, I am 100% all about developing our sport. I have saved a bit of data on our various Kansas Kids State Championships 2001-2014 and I am looking at kids who won and/or placed in state at a young age and I am tracking them to see if they are still in our sport. More importantly the kids that did not place at a very young age (a much larger number of the participants/card holders) - are they still in the sport? All this talk about cutting out this/that on the upper end age groups and adding younger and younger "Championships" is not part of the developmental process. Let alone - the bigger picture of growing the sport and creating a culture for life long fans. Just because we have cars in the garage or driveway does not mean we should let our 10 year old take the SUV for a spin to the playground.

Understand Children

"Coaches and parents need to understand that your 8yr old state champion may not even make the varsity wrestling team by the time he reaches high school due to the fact that he may either be burned out by the sport or may have failed to learn the proper skills needed to be a complete athlete."

"*Note: Sports experts have suggested that prior to age seven, children should be encouraged to develop physical abilities through informal free play. Skills developed in free play should then be re-enforced through physical education programs."

Please read the link below and look at the chart on different ages for sports:

And we should also be using the age and weight charts for folkstyle that they use for Freestlye/Greco.

What is the push to get rid of the HS division?
Are you disappointed at the competition?
Are you disappointed at the chance to watch the skill level?
I'm curious.
I enjoy the crud out of the 6u roly-poly matches. Usually it's more entertaining watching the refs trying to get all of the changes in control made. I'm wondering though why we are considering kicking the HS div out of the state series.

"Why?"

1 Reason I can think of.

USA Wrestling
WHAT IS USA WRESTLING?
USA Wrestling is the National Governing Body for the sport of Wrestling in the United States, and
as such, is its representative to the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and the International
Wrestling Federation (FILA). USA Wrestling is the central organization that coordinates amateur wrestling
programs in the nation and works to create interest and participation in those programs.
USA Wrestling has more than 220,000 members. These include athletes of all ages, coaches, officials,
parents, and fans striving together to strengthen the sport. Within the United States, USA Wrestling is
divided into State Associations. Each State is an affiliated organization with its own set of bylaws under
which it operates.
USA Wrestling is responsible for the selection and training of teams to represent the USA in
international competition, including World and Olympic competitions. An equal part of USA Wrestling’s
mission is focused on development of the sport’s grassroots. This is facilitated through sanctioning of
age-group tournaments and the chartering of member clubs through established state associations.
USA Wrestling also conducts regional and national championships for all age categories, developmental
camps, clinics, and coaches education programs. State and local competition is the major focus of annual
programming in each of our state organizations. Volunteers, coaches, officials, and parents are the life
blood of our organization. These leaders set up tournaments, run clubs, organize trips, and coach athletes
in their local area.
HOW DECISIONS ARE MADE IN USA WRESTLING
USA Wrestling is a not-for-profit organization composed of dedicated volunteers. Individuals donate
time, energy and expertise at every level from the local wrestling clubs to the National Board of Directors.
All policy decisions are made through a chain of committees reporting to an elected Board of Directors.
The Board of Directors meets yearly and determines the policy and direction of USA Wrestling.
USA Wrestling provides a variety of services and programs for its membership. Among them are
publications, educational programs, fundraising activities, coaching programs, and general information
about wrestling-related activities. USA Wrestling staff members are.....

I would guess that more wrestling is done by Kansas wrestlers outside of our state borders in non-USAW sanctioned events, than USAW sanctioned events. That is one of the reasons for going away from the January birthdate many years ago.

What Kansas is currently using
6-Divisions with 119-weight classes

USAW
6-Divisions with 86+weight classes

The + allows for more weight classes in Bantam,Intermediate and Novice divisions.

So the question is why not?

Again, if you're wanting to change, the question is "why?". What are we doing now that doesn't work that requires change us to change?
