Looks like 138 and 195 will be leaving a good wrestler home that weekend.

That 6A regional is one of the toughest I have seen. 7 of the top 10 teams and 43 ranked kids. Wow!

75% of the state has a relatively easy route to state. Seems pretty fair.

there is no such thing in HS, as you put it, "An easy road to state." Tough across the board by CLASS. Good luck to ALL, at regionals, and state.

I have to disagree Spexy. There absolutely are easy or at least easier roads to State. I know you have seen brackets with only 3 or 4 wrestlers. Or as Coltstrong and Coach Prieto point out the unfairness in the strength of one 6A regional vs the others. Ask any of the teams in the North regional if they want to change places with any of the teams from the DC regional. Once upon a time when only 4 wrestlers placed at State it was hard to argue balancing the regionals. Now when they place six wrestlers at the State tournament there is a very good chance that the 5th best wrestler in a very tough regional would have placed in the top six at state while wrestlers with losing records or even wrestlers who don't win a match at regionals end up qualifying.

re·gion·al
ˈrēj(ə)n(ə)l/
noun
plural noun: regionals
NORTH AMERICAN
an athletic contest involving competitors from a particular region.

It has not ever had anything to do with rankings!

If you want to make things fair we need to combine 5a and 6a and have a 16 man bracket to get into 1 state tournament.

Or take the top 3 and give the number 1s a first round bye at state.

Or just take 2 and have an 8 man bracket at state.

Every year there are regions that have 5 or more ranked wrestlers in the same weight. It is life.

Just invite everyone to state and call it good. There are only 32 6A teams. Don't forget to bring the 26 ribbons so everyone can have a prize.

Just playing the Devils advocate here.

Isn't this the exact reason that in kids the Districts were changed...to many good kids in D1 and D2 staying home.

Most can say it was to even out the numbers but everyone know the bottom line was state placers getting beat out in districts.

I have also never whined about 6a and 5a kids that have a horrible losing record winning one match and making to state, or the same division wining one match and in the final to qualify.

I feel the average quality of the 16 qualifiers in 4a/321A are generally better than the 16 5a and 6a (wow this will cut you loose Campus).

I don't mean the placers I mean the bottom 10.

Do I complain that 5a and 6a kids we beat qualify when we are in a tough 16 man bracket.

Not at all, losing backside semis last year 4-6 made us better this year.

Losing is a great motivator.

I didn't start this thread. I just contributed.

It's pretty easy for teams that don't have to go to the gauntlet in Dodge City to sit back and cast stones and gang up on the 25% of the state that makes up 70% of the best teams in 6A. (Yes that means the other 30% of the top ten are scattered out across the other 3 regionals.)

It's irrelevant to bring up one class versus another, classification is based on school enrollment I believe, however, I understand how your argument helps and hurts mine at the same time.

I just think this year is a good year to evaluate the way that they select teams for regionals. I do believe Derby was ADDED to ours this year, as if those other 7 teams weren't good enough.....

There is no doubt that 6A regional is loaded with talent. Every year there is a regional that seems to have it share of ranked wrestlers and some schools wishing they were In another. As Cokeley says "the cream always rises to the top" and for some it won't be high enough. We have had our share of tough regionals over the years in 4A with Abilene, Clay Center, Concordia, Goodland, Pratt, Andale, Buhler, Ulysses, Scott City (when 4a) to name a few and yes some good kids stayed home. Good luck to everyone!

Seeding meeting at that regional is going to be brutal! Oh wait a minute, all you have to do is bring "Chiefs" rankings with you! I guess it's easy! Good Luck trying to give your own stats in there!

The Ark City Regional is the toughest in 5A every year. We have just learned to deal with it. No need to change it, just play the hand you're dealt. Life is not Fair, The Fair happens in Hutchinson and is usually a lot of fun. grin
