I was curious about what everyones opinion is when it comes to weightlifting for wrestilng. I know that getting in the weight room has helped me in football as well as wrestling. It seems like alot of people complain that it affects flexibility. Being big and benching 300 doesnt seem to always be the key in wrestling strength though..

I don't see how this would hurt. I have seen a lot of good workouts that I incorporate and have used with my son at http://www.grapplersgym.com These are specific to wrestling and benefit the wrestler more than just bacic lifting.

I've always believed that weight training makes for an even better explosive wrestler.

I could go into details, but it would take forever. Let's just say that typically the lifts that wrestlers hate to do the most are the most beneficial.

That means squats, deadlift, powerclean. If you aren't doing those, you're wasting your time. All other lifts are "secondary."

I don't care how much a person benches. Can they get off the mat? Can they penetrate on a double? Bench doesn't do much for that.

Here is a link to a booklet put out by the University of Nebraska's strength and conditioning department on weightlifting for wrestlers. It is $10.00. We have used this book for a number of years and I think it is very useful. http://www.huskerpowerstore.com/huspowstrent.html

I agree, I feel like if you do different lifts, do some spriints, etc. you can become a much better wrestler. I just do alot more lifts than bench and squat, lateral raises w/e

Weightlifting does help with Wrestling but you must be coached in the proper technique and form to improve not only strength but also speed, explosive power and flexability. For more info on how proper weight training can help you contact Boris Urman at (913) 205-5513.

Michael wasn't lying about his lateral quickness, he's very quick, you outta see the footwork he has while running from the couch to the fridge, it's miraculous what a few dot drills can do, it's also helped him wrestle that turkey leg away from his brother, that's great speed

I actually do not really know if it has any adverse effects, because with muscle comes more mass, and less range of motion, but at the same time i believe you just have too retrain yourself to be flexible, i'm very flexible but at the same time i'm not too strong, but i believe if you are extremely one or the other it has it's advantages and disadvantages, but both will help improve you.

You know what, if you've just got absolute brute strength and you grab someone, it doesn't matter how quick they are, youve got'em. While elusiveness makes a guy harder to grab, its wrestling, eventually he has to get within reach. That is why I advocate weightlifting as a valuable supplement to wrestling. Take one look at recent Olympic Champ Brandon Slay. I suppose he did calestinics to make his veins stand out from his biceps that far eh? I'm not downing quickness, but I'm tired of reading about how weightlifting doesn't do any good.
Before you degrade lifting weights, take a look at a world class wrestler and tell me he's never been on a bench press.

Weight training during the season is great as long as you do it for the right reasons. Keep in mind that if you have not been lifting prior to the wrestling season your not going to see big gains in strength (some may) due to the high anaerobic nature of wrestling practices.

Lift for maintenance and endurance with total body exercises. Look into some of Coach Javoreks Complexes, you can find them on his website at http://www.istvanjavorek.com
