On Sunday, January 20th, the USAWKS Board of Directors met with representatives from Wichita and Topeka to discuss three options for the USAWKS Folkstyle State championships for the 2019-23 cycle. Proposals were submitted for the Kansas Expocentre, Intrust Bank Arena, and Hartman Arena. Invites were also sent to Hays, Salina, and Kansas City but they chose not to participate. On Monday, January 29th, the board reached a final decision and the Kansas Expocentre was selected as the host site for the 2019-2023 cycle. While the board saw merit in each of the proposals individually, the Kansas Expocetre stood out for several reasons including:

1) Best financial option for USAWKS
2) Best FREE and close/convenient parking for athletes and spectators
3) Best facilities for our use (considering competition floor space, seating, and auxiliary facilities)
4) Best compliance with the dates we requested; the Kansas Expocentre has been a long time host of 5A/6A KSHSAA State Basketball and chose to partner with USAWKS and forgo future KSHSAA state basketball opportunities in some years of this 5-year contract in order to be compliant with our requests!

The Kansas Expocentre also shared some of the upgrades they anticipate happening during this bid cycle to their facilities with the board; this also played a role in the board’s final decision in selecting the Kansas Expocentre.

The dates of the tournament in this cycle will be.
March 16-17 2019
March 14-15 2020
March 13-14 2021
March 12-13 2022
March 11-12 2023

What happened to the state body approved item number 1 below:

"The Folkstyle State Championships will be moved to a date two weeks earlier than currently scheduled, effective with the 2018-19 season."

Why are the dates listed above only 1 week earlier than the current one?

They are moved up two weeks. The State Tournament was by the bylaws the last full weekend of March unless it falls on Easter Sunday which then is moved to Friday and Saturday. Beginning in the 2018-2019 season we have an extra weekend in March. The tournament by the current schedule would have been March 30-31.
