Discuss Reminders: - Proposal here is in it's original form as it was submitted. This is one proposal and thus one vote
- Executive Board - Voted the following way:
1. 0 Yes, 11 No - Board No
Notes: USAWKS age group start dates align with the USA Wrestling Competition season. What age you are as of that date which is September 1st is the group that you are in for that season even if you age 1 year during the season. This is the same for all competitors at every division and both genders. This presents and even and level playing field that each competitor is either subject to or benefits from as they move from one year to the next. Moving date forward would just allow competitors to compete at the top end of their age group into the beginning part of the subsequent season so all it does is move the onus. The board feels there is not sufficient justification to make this change. A unanimous vote of no was registered.
The 2nd proposal is duplicative of 2 other proposals for adding weight classes to the female division, so no action was taken on this as the board recognizes that a vote yes or no on that issue will be handled by another proposal that covers it.
This was a proposal that was not presented at last years State Body meeting that should have been, it is now up for an up or down vote.
*This proposal appears in the document: 2024 Bylaw Changes.pdf - 2/3rds State Body Vote is required for passage of this item.
Hi Will,
Yes, I have a few items that I think would help Kansas Wrestling. Let me start out by saying that adding the True 2nd match made this year's State tournament an even better experience. Thank you for presenting that change for a vote. My first recommendation is to move the age group age from Sept 1st to Jan 1st to match other states including MO. I think if you were to really dig into this you would find that there are a lot of 11 year olds placing and winning in State in the 1 OU and 13 year olds in the 12U age groups. 4 months is a huge advantage at those ages and it's just not fair to those younger participants. Also wrestling season doesn't begin for most clubs until November or even December. So if nothing else, move it back to November 1st.
Second recommendation is to add another weight class in between the girls 1 OU 90lb 11 Olb and definitely for the 12U 120lb - 140lb weight class. Since there are now so many more girls wrestling, especially middle schoolers, adding an extra weight class in those spots would help girls maintain a regular weight and not have to worry about losing a few pounds so they're not giving up 1O lbs. 1O lbs is a pretty big jump and there should be enough girls now to fill an extra bracket at state. I'm sure regular tournaments would still continue to use the Madison bracket system. Hope this helps and thank you for your consideration.
