I think it depends. I think if you aren't big on football and only do it to keep in shape then to X-country. If you love football then do it. I think you have to do a fall sport if you want to wrestle cause it helps not only your conditioning but other mental parts of sports.

our coach doesn't believe in conditioning for football. so i am always gasping for air out on the field.

Pratt Begins what we call the High Intensity program next week. Denis will be sore and grumpy from that, so wrestling will be a real challenge until that is over. We do a lot of weight training at Pratt, as I am sure everyone does. I really don't know how much it helps the wrestling side of the coin, but it does really add to overall strength. The toughest part for Denis is to keep his weight down to a reasonable level so that he is able to stay at the same or lower weight than he was last year, and still be able to play his position well in football. Hard to keep that stuff in balance.

Are you serious? Just because it's fall doesn't mean that winter sports (wrestling really) is out of the question. Thimk year round... well football gets you geared up for wrestling, wrestling itself, then do track or something to cool down from a long hard season. No I played football all 4 years, but wasn't very good and didn't get to play much so I never really liked football. I viewed it as a warmup for wrestling, but if you really like football then go for it. Good luck to all wrestlers partaking in the sport of football.

I think lifting helps a wrestler.
Bent rows- they can help me with my snap downs or pulling to set up a shot.
Squat- leg power the drive on ur shot.

Snaps? you have no snap downs to use or a shot
Leg Power? When was the last time your legs had any extra power after having to move your upper body?
Overall you have no shot no power anything, just a lucky lateral drop.

I think from past experiences that it is good to go out for football because it keeps you in shape. As a rule most kids that wrestle usually excell on the football field especially on defense do to their tecnique training on the mat, the old phrase watch the hip not the head. Wrestlers are trained to "keep their body under control" so takleling is "more natural" for kids who have practiced it for years. Any sport you go out for is great the more one does the better off they will be. As to the topic fall or winter sports focus I think an athelete who wants to excell doesn't wait until that season to keep training in that sport. My son is a QB and LB and he has been working in the weight room and at camps all summer to get ready for this season. He also has been doing wrestling camps to so like I said before you do both. As to quote a camp we went to recently "offseason training makes in season champions" or something close to that either way I think you get my point. I have seen some of his friends neglecting staying in shape, and it will catch up to them on the field and on the mat. I say go out for football and have fun.

Other stuff? Such as training to compete in the nathan's hot dog eating contest?
