After some slight study and thought, based heavily on returning points and medalists I offer my choice for super top 10 2002-2003:
1. Hoxie
2. Hutchinson
3. Ark City
4. Garden City
5. Goodland
6. Manhatten
7. Colby
8. Emporia
9. Abilene
10. Columbus
Please feel free to talk trash and dispute my picks, then offer your own

I would for sure put Emporia in front of Manhatten cause of the fact that Emporia had 4 freshman go to state 1 got 4th and the other got 1st. I don't know where they place with everyone else but I would put them ahead of Manhatten.

That's a good point. I believe Manhatten has 8 returning qualifiers with 4 medalists ( two 4ths and two 5ths), verses 7 returning qualifiers and 3 (1st, 2nd and 4th) medalists for Emporia. However, they will be closely matched. It will be interesting to see who ends up on top this year. The extra qualifier and medal is the reason for squeeking ahead of Colby and Emporia.

although i dont think oakley will be as good as they were last year, i think they will still be able to compete with some of the schools on your list.

Mamasawn has the right idea....Do not sell Garden City short .

Garden City placed 8th the state last year with only one senior on the team....they have 9 returning state qualifers, 5 state placers and a state champion.

The Colby Dual Tournament and the Beloit Invitational should be very interesting if these lists are accurate.

The CHS dual tournament, which is held in mid- December, will feature Colby, Garden City and Hoxie - all listed above - plus Oakley, Scott City and several other above average teams.

If the field from last year's Beloit Tournament remains the same this year, you will see Hoxie, Colby, Manhattan and Abilene - all listed above - plus Clay Center and several other good quality teams.

Incidentally, according to Wrestling USA's regional high school team rankings, Richard Fergola has Hoxie first and Hutchinson second in the state and fifth and ninth, respectively, in the KS, OK, MO & TX region.

Looks like a great year! Especially in the Northwest Kansas League where the above ranked Colby Eagles, Goodland Cowboys and Hoxie Indians will battle it out. Throw in Atwood, Oakley, Oberlin, St. Francis and Quinter and it looks like a real dog-fight in the good ol' NWKL.

What other leagues in the state will witness elite ranked teams square off?

I believe the Baser-Linwood tourney will have the following teams: Garden City, Columbus, Abilene, Fort Scott, Bonner Springs, KC Turner, Shawnee Heights, Effingham, St. Thomas Aquintas, Junction City, Lawrence Free State, Olathe North, Spring Hill and of course Baser and a few others. Goodland was there last year but I don't think they are returning. There is also a team from Glenwood Iowa. I believe all those teams are top 10 teams from there respective classes. This tournement is quickly becoming one of the best in the state.

The Newton tourney will also be very interesting this year: Hutch, Ark City, Manhatten, Emporia, Bishop Carroll, Maize, Clay Center, Valley Center, Santa Fe Trail, Derby, Wichita Heights, Winfield, Salina south, McPherson, Augusta, Dodge City. I think most of those teams are also top ten.

Are you sure where Clay Center is going? I know they won the regional at Basehor-Linwood last year and the Basehor AD was recruiting them for the Basehor tourney. I understood Clay Center was very interested and considering it.

How does the NCKL shape up this year, I think there are several schools in that league that can hold there own weight. (For those not familiar with the NCKL the teams are Abilene, Clay Center, Concordia, Chapman, Marysville, and Wamego)

I think the match between Abilene and Clay Center for the title should be a dandy. Both teams should be top five maybe top 3 in the state. Concordia and Chapman each have a few good kids but not the depth that the other two have. Marysville also has good kids but maybe not the depth of Con. Wamego is working to get better.

I don't know what you think you are agreeing with that Coach Johnson said. His only comment was that Clay Center and Norton were going to the Newton tournament this season.
