I think there will be a number of coaches in the state that will not want to bring anybody because it interferes in their own time with their families. I think if kids can come on their own that would be fine, but to represent a school you would need a school sponsor.

Mr. Lamar I respect ur response but I totally disagree, not because i didnt place at state. but because i believe there are many kids who didnt place that could do well at this tournament.

Travis Budke 119 from TMP didnt place but he was a match away as a freshman. I believe hes good enough to wrestle in it.(EXAMPLE)

I saw him wrestle for the first time the other day and I say this kid is a tough cat (Panther, no pun intended).
Mike, First of all thanks for the compliment of my son. Coming from you I really do appreciate it and don't worry, there is no offense taken. You are one of the people I greatly admire in Kansas Wrestling and want to reaffirm that.

Now to my thoughts regarding this tournament. I obviously believe that it is appropriate to abide by whatever rules apply to this or any other particular tournament, but even if allowed to wrestle according to the entry rules; that is not mine or Nathan's decision. It is the decision of his high school coach. I would support the coach’s decision whatever it is. No one knows the needs of the team better than the head coach does. My concern, for my son, is not to primarily be an individual champion, but hopefully make his team better. If accomplishing that, I believe the individual rewards and benefit will come. It is the concept of helping the many, the team, that I desire for my son to learn more than any other. The lessons of sacrifice and serving others I believe is among the greatest lessons that one can learn in life. Don’t get me wrong the individual lessons are important and I desire my son to do the best he can, but on the whole spectrum of things related to wrestling, those things are not the most important.

Mr. Furches,

What a breath of fresh air! I wish more parents (in general) and especially parents of athletes competing in "individual" sports had the grounded outlook on sports and their true value as you!

As far as who to bring, I think each coach should bring any wrestler who will be competitive, regardless of placing the previous year. The real test is whether or not they will be able to place THIS year. If they have a legit shot, bring them!

I think Seniors should all try to come...I don't know about others who have been there, but it seems even a guy that didn't do to well in years past gets that "senior swing" and can do some remarkable things in that final year.

As far as only allowing state placer's to come, how many 103 pounders would be returning at that weight the next year. You may see this bracket have very few kids in it. And why not see who has the best team at this tournament at well. Any kid who the coach feels would be able to score some team points should be allowed to come. Sometimes it's these points that seal a tournament victory for a team.

I guess I didn't read this as a grand state. If it is, I'd be happy to bring state placers only. However, grand state would include seniors of 2005. Since this can't happen, I think we find out who the best is out of those entered. Either way, it's great to see people finding ways to make Kansas wrestling better.

Later,
Jilka

I agree! I think I should just post this tournament up on themat.com how many teams from out of state will be interested anyway?

I don't know how many of you guys are familar with the Wichita classic. I also think that some of these gun ho people might not have helped with these trny's. Well with the classic it started out small and got bigger. If you don't get it off the ground before you start pumping it up then it will never take off. Like Church said above, coaches are smart enough to figure out who to take and who to leave home. Maybe how they have seeding meetings they could plan now and decide on the top 7 kids from each class and each weight.

I agree with Carmona. Don't go out of state for numerous reasons...also then it isn't grand state, it is a national tourney.

Swayz you are thinking of a national seen. That would me that they would need to house parents and fan, with most important the wrestlers. People redo cities for the event that you have dreamed up in your head. Hays does not have the size to house all of this. Look at how crazy Topeka gets during kids state, and that has been in Topeka for years. Like I said start small and work up.

The real issue is who FHSU has INVITED as this is an invitational tournament, NOT an open tournament. It would do no good to post it on themat.com because only Kansas teams have been invited.

Just saw the KWCA Seniors

6A Tommy Edgmon, Goddard
5A Josh Baldridge, Haysville
4A Ross Taplin, Abilene

If this trny would be going on now(with out people from out of state) I think these three would have won their weight. I think these were great selections. That is why I think this trny would be great. For those who took second to see if being in another class would help them out. I tell you rank 7 guys in each weight and that gives you a 28 man bracket. The 7th seed would be more of a spoiler or wild card type person maybe more where your young ones come in to play.

I really like this idea. I think it would be a premiere events in the state of KS and the midwest region. I really do like the idea of an all state tournament in which everyone is invited. No more who won the Bobcat vs. Newton TOC, it would be all decided upon here. Start with this and then later on down the road if you really wanted too, then add other states, CO TX MO NE OK IA etc. and really have a premiere tournament. Start small as mentioned above and run it with just KS for the first few years to build a base then add on. I see nothing but great things from this state in the future.

Is it going to be split up so 4 matches one day and 4 another or something. I just hope all the weights are pretty equal depth wise. Talent wise I could care less as long as 103 doesn't have 7 guys and 160 have 28, then it would be like comparing a 5 or 6a regional to a 321 or 4a regional.
