I'll give props to Lakin Dreiling from SC. Had a great freshman year and placed third in a tough bracket at 4A state.

i didnt see any wrestling this year so im just going to throw this name, record, school, and league out there: colt nickel, 30-5, prairie view and that record came in frontier league competition most of the year. and he is at 130 pounds so he wasnt wrestling a ton of other little freshman lightweights like these other guys you are all mentioning.

I would have to agree with you coach Lamar. There are some really tuff 3-2-1A Freshmen. Nathan Brockelman from Norton was so close to winning state. And that Mickelbrink kid from Atwood I watched him and he is a little stud.

Yeah i agree "Bluejay Pride" Brockelman was totally dominating until the finals and came up a little short against farber who has been there before. i was dissapointed i saw that atwood kid totally anihilate the Chrisinger kid from cozad who has placed second the last two years in nebraska. i was for sure Mickelbrink would win state after that performance

i have to disagree with almager, i think nill and grape just to name a few were better. nill beat almager early and would of been in regionals with him, now almagers state wouldve been different if he had been on edgemons side of the bracket, he wouldve lost to tommy in the second round and then faced woodford on the first backside, may not have placed. my only point is that if nill is healthy it makes for a different bracket

No way Mercer or Hinman - some little kid pounded both at Wichita and both scratched at kids subs. Jed Mamie freshman of the year!

I could give my vote to Mamie, too. For a kid to place 6th at a weight like 160 is pretty impressive. (As we all know, 160 is the weight before people start to get fat and lazy.)

Plus, his mom is nice.

Jed Mamie?? Id say yes because he placed at a higher weight dominanted by ripped cats like Sondy, Kromer, Conor, and Johnson. But some could say that taking 6th at any weight does not warrant a "Freshmen of the Yr" designation.

I could go with mamie but as far as stonewall and his comments on almaguer?????fact of the matter is almaguer defeated nill 2-1 in a very tough 24 man bracket at the fall brawl and placed 3rd nill 4th...nill beat almaguer 3-1 in overtime at the classic both very tight matches....you can what if all you want stonewall but another fact is almaguer finished 2nd at state!!! and peaking towards the end of the season should be a goal. Lots of good freshman this year mamie is a stud im sure both almaguer and mamie will be looking for good seasons next year

Paulie Hansen had a phenomenal year and really shined on a team that had a great year. I think we will only see good things in the future for him. He's got my vote for fresh of the year. But......Bahe is right there with him. The Bahe wrestling genes must be very strong!

Lot of good frosh out there, but guys Adam Almaguer took 2nd at state. Yes Nill is a stud, but Adam beat him at fall brawl and lost to him in OT. Jed is a stud and is going to be a great one, placing 6th at a mature weight is awesome. But Adam gets my vote.

Is it tougher for a Freshman 119 or 125 pounder to place 2nd at state or for a Freshman wrestler like Jed Mamie @ 160 pounds or my son Steven @ 215 to place 6th?

Anybody who could wrestle Seth to two, one point decisions (and be looking to score when time runs out) is one hell of a wrestler. Looks to me, from an earlier post, that 5A is hardest on freshman as well. Hansen may have lost a couple early to top wrestlers, but he was the best pound for pound freshman wrestler this year in my humble opinion. Wish he and Seth had met in the finals instead of the semis. Hansen wrestles with no fear and is a goer for six minutes. Comparing him to sixth place finishers doesn't cut it.
