I was wondering what league does everyone think is the toughest in the state?

i'm not sure who's in what leagues out west, but theres got to be a league out there that is just plain nasty. Is Goodland in a League with Colby? If they are, that would almost be my pick unless Hoxie is in with like Oakley and Sainty.

If thats a league, there is no question that that is the toughest. There were how many state champs out of that league alone. Wow. I might have to check that league tourney out next year.

Not sure if this is 100% correct, but it should be close. NWKL qualified 60 wreslters for 321A and 4A. Of those 60, 33 of them placed. 15 of those were in the finals and 8 of them were state champs.

NWKL results at state: 2003
Atwood- 7th in 321a
Colby- 7th in 4a
Goodland- 2nd in 4a
Hoxie- 1st in 321a
Oberlin- 6th in 321a
Oakley- 4th in 321a
St. Francis- 9th in 321a

This is not out of the ordinary for our league. It is the best wrestling league in the State.

I am not positive on this but I think Oberlin actually tied for 5th in 321A. One thing I am sure of is there should be no disputing the fact that this is the toughest league in KS followed - by the MCL.

I wrestled in the NWKL since I started wrestling and I think that the matches I got in that league and the competition in that league propaired me for the rest of the matches throughout the season. On friday nights you never had an easy match when you were going up against an NWKL wrestler.

RJW:
This will age me a bit - but I coached wrestling at a little place called Tribune from 1974-1983.
That's where I was introduced to the Northwest Kansas League - very impressed then and now.
When I started coaching I think NWK had the following (almost legends in wrestling history):
St. Francis - Gabel & Jenkins
Oberlin - Buzz Matson
Atwood - Garcia
Oakley - A kid named Samuelson
Hoxie - Either Mauk or Pickenpaugh
Goodland - Rocky Welton
Colby - Can't rembember - Lampe was at the JUCO
And I think Norton was in there - Jake Durham
I do believe that there are several state championship teams included (1-2-3A & 4A) over the years.
Currently, I think the record book shows the NWK league top notch.

Tough League?? I THINK SO

i'm not saying that the nckl is the toughest, but i think it is pretty tough.

abilene
chapman
clay center
concordai
marysville
wamego

31 state qualifiers
17 state placers
5 state champions

1st abilene
4th clay center
10th concordia

i think that is pretty good for six teams.

I won't dispute that you could argue quality of competition between classes (321a, 4a, etc.) but the Ark Valley League had quite a showing in State competition.

2 team titles (Hutch-6A, Ark City-5A,)
McPherson 7th-5A, Derby 9th-6A
Campus, Winfield, and Newton all in the top 20 in 5A. As for El Dorado, we didn't fair as well but we were competitive. The league combined for the Following:
61 qualifiers
32 placers
13 finalists
8 State champs
Congrats to Hutch for the repeat, and to Ark City for being back on top.
