Not to beat a dead horse, but I hear that some Platte County-ites are getting on the Excuse Train about the old 2001 Melvin Douglas Invite, in which The Hat beat the #13 or #14 team in the nation. Granted, PC won the recent SMS tourney...but Kansas is still tops.

Now, this post is not to brag on the Hat and it's not to belittle Platte County. It's purpose is to make funny jokes and prove once and for all that Kansas is the best wrestling state in the world. (Actually, since Kansas is the greatest state in the world, the title of "Best Wrestling State" is already implied.)

So here's how I remember that tournament: We were pretty pumped, because we had a freaking sweet team and we wanted to see the mythical Platte County, who had won like, 55 state championships in a row. Granted, they're a small school, but they were nationally ranked. (And we were ranked 2nd in 6A.) Plus, with PC there, it made the tournament a little more exciting, since it's usually a pretty easy tournament.

First and foremost, everyone was terrified of Chase Verdorn. He was enormous. He was the spitting image of Ivan Drago, of Rocky IV fame. They had some tiny guy who was awesome too, but...eh. Verdorn was scary. Everyone was impressed.

As for little Prant, he was 16 and wrestling in his first ever varsity tournament. (Little Prant missed Leavenworth due to the fact that he was violin-ing away the week before.) Naturally, Prant was un-terrified of Vase Cherdorn. Everyone in the gym knew that the Melvin Douglas Invite would come down to two battles: Manhattan vs. Platte County, and Prant vs. Vase.

Well, my friends, neither turned out to be the Battle Royale that was promised. Hat Town had like, 12 in the finals (though we ended up losing a bunch...Coach was mad.) and ended up winning the tournament by like, 60-80 points. Of course, with the team title locked up, everyone would normally leave. However...the Prant/Vase matchup was too delicious to miss, so everyone stayed around.

Prant and Vase did not disappoint. Vase took off his warmups to reveal a sculpted, V-shaped chest and telephone pole legs. (Unfortunately, he also had some pretty girly tattoos.) To answer the Missourian's show of might, Prant took off his warmups to reveal a saggy chest, complete with udders and lots of extra skin. No one was impressed.

That would soon change, however. The epic first period began with a Cherdorn takedown, and the crowd knew they were in for a clash of the titans. After battling mightily, Prant managed to go out of bounds on two occassions, and the stage was set:

Prant returned to the center mat. The ref grabbed his whistle, placed it in his mouth, and just like that, it happened. The whistle blew, and Prant exploded with the power of a million Space Shuttles. Cherdorn was taken aback by this show of force, and had no idea what to do. And soon--it was over.

Prant had caused blood time. He had cut The Russian. The crowd went wild. Victory and babes ensued.

Oh, and Hat Town owned Platte County in the tournament. I know they were missing a state champ or two, but it would have made no difference. Oh-- and we got 2nd in state that year. (I believe Platte County won state, and Vase went on to finish 2nd in the country, beating 2X state champ Josh Carrol in the process.) This just proves my point that Kansas rules, Missouri drools.

If you're speaking of the recent, as in last weekend, SMS tournament, PC did NOT win that tournament, Aquinas did. Sorry, no time to attempt witty banter.

wow, when it comes to great stories that one is better than Homer's Odyssey, Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo, and every Bernstein Bears book put together. I believe that Garker vs. Cherdorn and Fat Pat vs. Skinny Benny have to be the two greatest battles of our time.

In fact, Platte County wasn't even a close second. Aquinas pretty much tore it up.

And my brother's old girlfriend was friends with Chase Verdorn. It made me feel very inadequate as a 215 pounder with her watching.

Fat Pat vs Skinny Benny! I had forgotten about that battle Royal. Prant- who called the winner of that match, I'll make it a multiple choice questions for you:

a) Coachtwink
b) Prant
c) Dingbat
d) Otto

and the correct answer is: A of course.

Prant, since you are in the story telling mood, why don't you inform everyone of the Fat Pat vs Skinny Benny saga!

Verdorn, is, was, and always will be an animal ... but I had no idea ... that he had a problem holding his mud!

Garker, you rock when it comes to the art of
foruminging. You crack me up, you make me laugh, and there is nothing like a good laugh right after getting out of a grueling wrestling practice and not being in such a good mood. My spirits are lifted. Chewbacca, the Homer's Odyssey analogy was right on time as well.

Maybe Manhattan should come to Platte City's tournament next year. That should answer the debate of MO vs. KS. Actually, most of the rest of KC pretty much bites, but PCHS vs. Manhattan should be a tasty match-up.

i am sorry btu in highschool wrestling we use the best at the battle of the border Ks vs. Mo and Mo stomped kansas all around kansas had 2 wins from payne and from middleton and thats it fitzgerald,elsrode,munyan,etc.. all got beat all around right now i have to say missouri is better right now but Kansas wrestling is growing and becoming a tougher state to deal with i give it 3-4 more years and missouri wont be able to keep up...

I think a better gauge would be points scored by each state at high school nationals. Richard D Salyer--can you help us out with this one?

I wasn't talking about Missouri as a whole, just about Kansas City wrestling. Last weekend I attended my first-ever KC tournament. Aside from PC and STA, the quality of wrestling was exactly as expected: crappy to the max. It was quite the comedy of errors--even in the finals. Sloppy shots, reaching back off the bottom, poor positioning, et cetera. Quite honestly, it looked like a JV meet. It's no wonder that KCK schools consistantly come to Wichita with stellar records, only to go 2 & BBQ at the big dance.

When it comes to performance at Fargo which is at the top of the college recruit list along side HS Nationals, Kansas rules Missouri. Also got their number in the National duals. Just a thought.

Dingbat was at SMS and I didn't see him? Sad...

And a lot of KC wrestling is pretty bad. That's why I always appreciated our coach scheduling competition away from home. In my last two years we went to meets such as the Colby Duals, Basehoor-Linwood, Colombia-Hickman, Washburn Rural, etc., all in an effort to get us some different looks at the best in the region and I think it really helped out a lot in the end.

Yeah, MancerL, SME really made some noise after all that scheduling.

We had two people place at state, one of which was a state champion. It's not as if the mighty Lancers are the worst team in the state.

I'm sorry, MancerL. All I seem to remember is hitting a guy in the apples with an overhead from three feet away. He may have won the match, but I definitely won the war.

Oh, I also seem to remember winning lots of football games...and wrestling tournaments...

(Well, not me personally, but a guy I know...)
