In a recent Sports Illustrated, there was an article on the Iowa state wrestling tournament. For you Complainy McComplainersons out there, from what I gathered there were only 8 mats for all four classifications. The tournament lasts four days.

The beginning of the article also stated, "Kids who place 8th here would probably win it in Michigan." What about Kansas? I'd like to think that Kansas's best can hold their own with Iowa's best most years. (However, I think they kill us on the depth issue.)

Finally, where did Glenwood finish at Basehor, and does anyone have their final state finish?

Glenwood finished 9th in 2A with 49 points. Waterloo Columbus finshed first with 112.5 points, ending Emmetsburg's (102 points) try for five-straight titles.

And a couple of points that the article doesn't really explain:

1 — The tournament is normally a three-day affair, not a four. But this year, last year and next year, construction on the new state-of-the-art 17,000-seat arena that will be the new home of the tournament beginning in 2006 has forced the tournament to four days. Half of the exits in Veterans Auditorium had to be removed, so to help with crowd control, they went to the four-day format. It will be back at three days in 2006.

2 — Iowa's 300-plus wrestling school are divided into three, not four classes. And, instead of all the classes being on the mat at once, seperate session are run each round for 1A, 2A and 3A. Most fans sit through all of the classes, but if you're a one-class person, you have the option of seeing it all, then getting out for a while.

Remember back to the old days when ks had three day tournaments. Good thing kansas is a little more progressive.
