now that football season is almost over, I intend to pack up the 'ol minivan and wtch some of the best tournaments early just to get a feel of who has what. If anyone has an opinion about
some of the toughest tournaments that go down in December or early January I'd be happy to hear them, as I intend to see a couple, at least.

Cosmo, Thanks for the great resource to track teams and tournaments again this year. I was in Korea last year, so it allowed me to track most of the KS wrestling action.

Mike -

Don't know how far you are willing to travel, but the Colby Eagle Invitational Dual tournament was pretty good last year.

Hoxie, Garden City, Concordia, Scott City, Oakley, Colby, TMP, Wray, CO, Liberal, Atwood, Shawnee Heights, SM East, Hays High, Oberlin, Phillipsburg, Plainville, Sante Fe Trail, Washburn Rural were there last year.

I understand there have been some additions/deletions this year, but have not seen the list yet.

Format was dual meets within three pools of six. Best team from each pool advanced to wrestle a round robin with the other pool winnners for 1st - 3rd place. Same for 4th - 6th, 7th - 9th, etc.

It is a Friday and Saturday event and is held on the second weekend of the season.

I am not sure what you mean by good early season tournament. While I believe passionately in the need to face tough competition during the year to prepare yourself for state. I think a good early season tournament is one that allows new kids to get lots of experience (and a taste of SUCCESS) quickly so they can build on it during the year, but I have a hunch that isn't what you meant.

The 2003 Colby Dual Tournament will add two Denver schools - Lakewood HS and Chapparel HS, and Kapaun Mt. Carmel. Washburn Rural and Shawnee Mission East are out.

Thanks for the info, Coach Beims. If my son does not have a tournament that weekend I will be there, I do think that your tournament is better than Ulysess or Garden city as far as a showcase of early season. Good luck this season, Keep 'ol Schuyler healthy at the end of the season and that 152 brackett should be yours, and I hope your other guys do well too.

I would argue that for good entertainment and competition the Valley Center Dual tournament on Dec 7 is good. Derby,Junction City, Chanute, Valley Center, Bishop Carroll,Salina South, Winfield, Great Bend,Wichita South, and Clay Center are all there. Of course every year the strength varies but since it is a dual tournament (and therefore round robin in nature) you get to see alot of great matchups that might not happen in a traditional tournament.
