Swayz,
What bothers me about Lutz's response to you is that instead of doing a little research to give you a correct answer to your question, he decides instead to give you a low class remark. Or should I say a no class remark?

Or should I say a no class remark? It is Sweazy and Husker Fan who write of matters of which they do not know the facts. On May 27, 2005, I was informed by Kevin Ulwelling, the Newman University Athletic Director, the due diligence study has not been completed, and NO decision has been made regarding adding a womens wrestling program. It appears Lutz was correct and Husker Fan is commenting without performing the requisite research. For Sweazy to comment on matters of which he has NO or limited knowledge is a pattern and is common, however I expect more from Husker Fan who is striving to be a driving force in the college wrestling movement.

Richard can you or others tell me what is driving even the idea at Newman to add womens wrestling? They don't have to comply with Title IX do they? Do they have a benefactor with interests in that regard? Seems kind of off the wall for a private school.

Richard,
My comment on Mr. Lutz's response to Aaron's question did not have anything to do about the accuracy of his remark pertaining to whether or not Newman was starting a women's wrestling program. Lutz's answer to that was more of a question than a statement as to whether or not they were starting a program. Lutz's answer was not a yes they are having one or no they are not having a team. It was a why I didn't even know they were having a team. Well make a simple call to the Newman Athletic Department and find out. Isn't that what most responsible sports journalists would do?
My main objection to his response was this part of his reply: " But I'd pay to watch."
To me, he was trying to be humorous in a way that is demeaning to women wrestlers and women in general. Is it that big of a deal, probably not but I bet there are a lot of women athletes and their families that would not appreciate that comment. I have a daughter who is an athlete and I do not appreciate that remark. I don't think he was trying to compliment women wrestlers with that remark. If I am misreading the intent of that remark then I publicly apologize to Mr. Lutz.
I am not striving to be a leader in this renewed effort to bring Division I wrestling to Kansas either. If anyone is the leader right now, it is Sean McCarthy. I am just trying to keep people informed and motivated as to our progress. I very much want to see it happen. I am trying to do things as Sean asks me. I do not have the wrestling experience or knowledge to be a leader in this effort. I am just a helper in the effort. I really do hope it happens though. I believe Kansas truly deserves to have at least one NCAA Division I team.

http://boards.kusports.com/showflat.php?...e=0&fpart=2 There is some more current conversation going on the above Lawrence World Journal forum on the subject of adding NCAA Division I wrestling at KU. Maybe some of you USAW-KS high school forum contributors would like to join me in stirring up interest within the Lawrence community for this cause.

Here is my position on adding wrestling in the state:
10-number of starting spots for college.
40- number of starters there will be for regional competition next year in the NJCAA from Kansas junior colleges.
20- number of starters for 4 year programs in our state next year.
meaning 20 guys that are starters in Kansas Junior colleges run a great chance of getting lost in the mix and not continuing on.
We need more 4 year opportunities in the state...if we have the juco feeders isn't it about time to add something to feed off it?!
I think small schools like the NAIA and DII's are the way to go in the state and would instantly add great rivalries in my opinion.

A tidbit I heard last night in the coaches meeting at Brute was for every 150 wrestlers we have in high school there is only 1 (one) collegiate opportunity!
Are you making a POSITIVE difference in the life of kids?

Aaron:
I would also like to see some more D-II programs at Emporia State, Pitt State, Washburn and any other traditional Kansas D-II that I forgot to mention. It would be great to get some more NAIA programs besides Newman. It would also be good to see some more junior college programs. I know my area could certainly use one if not two at Kansas City Kansas Community College and Johnson County Community College. All of these would be great and I hope it happens someday.
But I still think it is very important that we also add NCAA Division I programs at WSU, KSU and KU. Division I programs get more media attention. Not that there was a lot of coverage in the Kansas City area but there was some coverage on the University of Missouri's Max Askren run to his NCAA championship. Unfortunately I bet there was very little on our Kansas NAIA champion from Newman and our Kansas NCAA D-II champion from UNO. It is the same thing with basketball and football. The media focus is on the area D-I teams for these sports too. Kids notice this coverage. It can be a motivating factor for them.
I think that young wrestlers aspire to become NCAA Division I wrestlers like young baseball players aspire to become major league baseball players. If there are Kansas NCAA Division I wrestling programs that is going to provide a lot of motivation and opportunity for the young wrestlers of Kansas. It would be a positive motivating and growth force for Kansas wrestling. I would envision these local NCAA Division I college wrestlers putting on camps and clinics during the year for our young Kansas wrestlers. The media coverage would make these NCAA D-I wrestlers very popular with our young wrestlers.
So yes, I want to see these smaller division schools add programs too. Ideally there would be a wrestling program at every college and university in Kansas that has basketball and football teams. But I still think it is extremely important to add D-I teams at WSU, KSU and KU. I would not want us to accept the idea that NCAA Division I wrestling is just not going to happen at those three universities.
Randy, if we could do all that you could report to us a better ratio than that 150 to 1 ratio.

Mike Furches entered some good information on the Lawrence World Journal that shows how well our Kansas wrestlers are doing from the Brute National results and on how many NCAA All Americans that we had this year. http://boards.kusports.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=196310&page=0&fpart=6&vc=1
