Richard,
My comment on Mr. Lutz's response to Aaron's question did not have anything to do about the accuracy of his remark pertaining to whether or not Newman was starting a women's wrestling program. Lutz's answer to that was more of a question than a statement as to whether or not they were starting a program. Lutz's answer was not a yes they are having one or no they are not having a team. It was a why I didn't even know they were having a team. Well make a simple call to the Newman Athletic Department and find out. Isn't that what most responsible sports journalists would do?
My main objection to his response was this part of his reply: " But I'd pay to watch."
To me, he was trying to be humorous in a way that is demeaning to women wrestlers and women in general. Is it that big of a deal, probably not but I bet there are a lot of women athletes and their families that would not appreciate that comment. I have a daughter who is an athlete and I do not appreciate that remark. I don't think he was trying to compliment women wrestlers with that remark. If I am misreading the intent of that remark then I publicly apologize to Mr. Lutz.
I am not striving to be a leader in this renewed effort to bring Division I wrestling to Kansas either. If anyone is the leader right now, it is Sean McCarthy. I am just trying to keep people informed and motivated as to our progress. I very much want to see it happen. I am trying to do things as Sean asks me. I do not have the wrestling experience or knowledge to be a leader in this effort. I am just a helper in the effort. I really do hope it happens though. I believe Kansas truly deserves to have at least one NCAA Division I team.
