LCHS holds off Chargers in dual
CHERRYVALE ‹ Heading into the final two matches of the evening, the Labette County Grizzlies and Cherryvale Chargers were locked in a dual that could have gone either way.
The Grizzlies led by six points, but with two victories, the Chargers could have pulled even or ahead. Dustin Henderson made sure that didn¹t happen.
Henderson pinned David Staton in the first period to seal the Grizzlies¹ 39-33 dual victory in a battle that pleased both coaches.
³Our effort was tremendous tonight,² Cherryvale coach James Renfro said. ³I thought our kids went out and wrestled with great emotion and just got after them. This was a great dual, and the fans got their money¹s worth.²
Cherryvale¹s two open weights, 103 and 135 pounds, wound up being the difference in the final outcome, with the Grizzlies picking up six points in each of those weight classes. Among the matches decided on the mat, though, there were several nail-biters.
³This was an exciting dual,² LCHS coach Drew Charles said. ³There were a lot of matches that could have gone either way. Cherryvale is a much improved team.²
Freshmen Quentin Ybarra and Joey Hambleton joined Henderson, a senior, as LCHS¹ winners by fall. Paul Berry, Tim Case, Johnny Moore, Aaron Haselwood and Adam Blaes pinned their opponents to keep Cherryvale in it.
³We ended up a little short on the score, but the effort and the emotion was there and as a coach, I can¹t ask for more than that,² Renfro said. ³We will correct a few little things in practice, and then end our first half of the year at Anderson County on Saturday.²
The Grizzlies travel to Burlington for a double-dual with the Wildcats and Eureka on Tuesday.
