I'm pretty sure Goodman from South is at 152 now.

I couldn't find much about goodman. The latest i found him was at 171 @ the johnson county classic. So he is at 52 now. That is a lot of weight to drop in that short amount of time.

6A:
1st-Neil Cisper ST
2nd-Brandon Hancock GD

5A:
1st-Nathan Payne PL
2nd-Mike Steinmetz KT

4A:
1st-Kyle Davis RH
2nd-Kyle Florry BW

3-2-1A:
1st-Chris Pursel AC
2nd-Brett Keck DC

First, congratulations to all of the above wrestlers for making the State finals. Extra congratulations to the winners. I think a special bit of recognition should go to GoldenDomer who set up this poll topic. The only finalist not on the list was Brett Keck DC.

How does that look for an 8 man Grand State bracket? Who would be the top four finishers and in what order? I know Nathan Payne just won his third State title but Neil Cisper must have been very dominant in 6A. He pinned all of his opponents in less than two minutes. I have seen Neil wrestle this year but none of the rest. What do some of you who are at the high school meets a lot think? What would be the result of a Grand State in this 171 class?

No doubt, this would be a killer bracket, but I would have to give the nod to Davis of Rose Hill. He has had an excellent season, and improves with every bout. Hope all these guys show up for the senior classic!!

When it comes to state, Payne was the best out of the bunch. Give the kid some credit for winning three titles, especially when he came in at an upper weight as a freshman.

I agree with matchbox, for Payne to win Three State titles and to come within 2 matches of winning four State titles speaks for itself. Congrats to Cisper on winning 6A 171, but the level of talent in that bracket is weak compared to 5A, 4A and 3a.

6A's bracket may not have been the toughest. However, Cisper has beaten Purcel, Flory, and Steinmetz. From what I hear he dominated Steinmetz in their matchup. I hear his match against Malloy could have gone either way. Then he pinned every guy in 6A he faced in the tournament. I think if you are going to pick anyone at 171 better than Cisper you can probably argue that Davis is better. But no one else.

Cisper is good, but his bracket was by far the weakest. Last year Payne pinned Brandon Hancock in the quarterfinals at state. He went on to place 5th or 6th. He was Cisper's opponent in the finals and that is not saying much. However, Nathan Payne was a three time state champion and no one else in that bracket will ever be able to say that.

What about Payne, three time state champ? I think a pretty strong argument could be made for him.

I'd like to see a tournament with the top 3 in each class. You can't determine who the best is just from 1 or 2 days of wrestling. Definately the best through out the whole season was Malloy, but he had a bad tournament. A Cisper v. Kosko matchup in the finals would have been a much better finals match. Malloy had beaten Payne earlier in the year by a score of 7-2, so by just taking this one tournament into consideration is not a way to decide who the best 171 pounder in the state is.

The score of the Malloy-Payne match was actually 7-4. I know, I was there.

No doubt about Payne's success in the state tournament the last three years. But that doesn't make him the best. For a three time state champ to lose as many matches as he has in my mind doesn't make him one of the best, especially this year. Payne wasn't that impressive in the matches I saw him wrestle. State title or not, he's not in the top three in my book.

What happened to the wrestler from Circle that wrestled 171#? Anybody know? Injury or what? Just curious.

I think Payne certainly is one of the best and the three losses really only tells that these guys are all pretty close and anybody could win. We really almost had a grand state at the Basehor tour (didn;t Malloy win it) but then he didn't fair as well at state. There isn't a nickels difference in a number of these guys.

Cisper beat Flory, Flory has beaten Payne twice, Payne is 1-1 against Malloy, and Malloy beat Cisper. I'm not sure about the rest of them, but this shows how close the competition is.

Cisper beat Steinmetz, Steinmetz has beaten Malloy, and I think Flory beat Steimetz.

WOW,Steinmetz beat Malloy, Malloy beat Flory, Flory beat Steinmetz, Malloy beat Payne, Flory beat Payne, Payne beat Malloy, Malloy beat Steinmetz, Steinmetz beat Sponsel, Malloy beat Sponsel, Sponsel beat "who cares", Malloy beat Cisper, Cisper beat Steinmetz, Round and round we go, all 6 listed above are great wrestlers, along with Davis, Sad part all gone but 2, Malloy and Cisper better win state next year, and in general, any one of them on any given day would prove to be # 1 un-till the next day came and they wrestle again. Its been a pleasure to see them wrestle for years.

Well just like I said a week ago a Grand State in this weight class would really be interesting. You could throw in the the top four finishers at each class and make it a 16 man bracket. Too bad it will not happen. I would love to see it, of course along with the other weight classes too.

Regardless of who beat who between them, Payne beat me at Ottawa last year, so he automatically gets the title of "Best 171 in the Universe."

I let him win, though.
