I was just curious to see how many Coaches some of the different HighSchools have?

I know at Topeka Seaman we have 4, But I have seen teams with quite a few like Manhattan and Aquinas they have enough coaches to put together a pretty good dual team? Any thoughts or comments???

I'm glad this topic was brought up. I get so frustrated seeing the number of coaches some programs have that are 4a like my alma mater Chapman, but we have 1 head coach (Jeff Sheets) for high school, middle school, and kids club. He has a part time assistant at middle school, and a student aide as an assistant coach this year at the middle school and high school.

If the Champan roster is current, according to the link provided below, Champan has twelve wrestlers on the roster.

2005-2006 Chapman Irish Wrestlers!

A coach to wrestler ratio of 1:6.

Coaching for the kids club is a volunteer service Coach Sheets provides for the love of the sport.

While that may be for the love of the sport, there is no reason he should be in charge of both the high school and the middle school programs when the seasons criss cross. We had JV guys quit earlier this year because there wasn't enough coaches to cover Varsity, Middle School and JV, thus JV would just practice. It's the administration's fault on this one. Jeff works way to hard to keep the program going, but only can work with what he has.

I know of a school in Wichita who has three real coaches and three other who think they are coaches and they have no idea what they are doing.

When I was Tonganoxie years ago, my assistant high school coach Dean Moss and myself started up the junior high program that exists today. There was no money for uniforms, equipment and certainly not a coach including ourselves. We just pillaged the high school for equipment and worked pro gratis.

A system that worked well was once the high school season started, we shortened the junior high practice to one hour and had the high school kids lift weights and run during this time period. The high school then practiced after the junior high and we encouraged those kids to stick around afterwords to watch practice as long as they could. This may not work in every community and may involve some busing of kids, but when your coaching staff is thin, this could be an avenue to pursue.

This past season I was the new junior high assistant wrestling coach and drew an additional salary for that gig....very cool.

Assistant coaches or coaches have to be paid individuals and not volunteer I believe is the rule by KSHAA.

It is very tough for a Head coach to over see all the program including kids. Sure some say that kids in for the love of the sport but in reality it is for the high school program. It is tough to find people willing to coach and control the kids program.

We have Junior High season running right now and I don't like it. I would liek to go before christmas and give the high school the room when it counts most-

we have a 1:7 this year because we were lucky enough to add an assistant Jr. High Coach to our Assistant High school and Head High school

Colby has 4 coaches and 50 kids out.

Ratio of 12.5:1

The Colby basketball team has 3 coaches for 18 kids out. Ratio of 1:6. Probably due to the fact that basketball is sooooooooo dangerous and they need constant supervision. The great ratio is really working. They have 3 wins. The most interesting ratio is the coach to win ratio of 1:1!!
