The gwal all-star team and south's list got me thinking. If I could make a all-star team out of the entire history of Bishop Carroll who would be on it. Some teams will have too many and may need to create two teams, but this could be interesting.

Here are the rules.
1) Use today's weight classes- so you might have to adjust
2) For flexibility you can use any weight they wrestled in high school (not just their senior year) at which they medalled at state.
3) You can move them up one weight class, but not down.
4) Please list qualifications to justify your choice.
5) Try not to use current wrestlers, unless thier resume is so outstanding you can't avoid it.

Here is an all-star team for West High School. I only included wrestlers that I had the fortune of coaching. Obviously, there are other good wrestlers from West High like Tristen Deshazer, Joe Smith, Henry Figures, Bobby Wiley, Jim Hambleton, etc. but since I didn't coach them I did not include their names.

103-Paul Myers, (1994) St Champ, on West's 1994 state championship team, never wrestled before high school
112-Tony Trevino, (2001) St Champ, pinned his way through regionals and state culminating with a pin over Sequoyia Hill, on 2001 state championship team, never wrestled before high school
119-Michael Bradley, (1999-2001) 2X state champ, beat Shawn Bunch at least 4 times that I remember, on 2001 state championship team, one of the top 3 wrestlers that I ever coached.
125-Danny Deshazer, (1988,89) 2X state champ, undefeated his senior year. My 1st state champ, so he holds a special place in my heart.
130-Maurice Gatewood, (1989) 1X state champ, I think he would have won also as a senior but was injured, pulled one of the biggest upsets I ever saw when he beat Landon Richardson from KC Sclagle.
135-J.R. Phillips (2001) St Champ, took down Zach Roberson at the state tournament when he was a sophomore, on 2001 St Championship team.
140-Kenny Taylor (1995,96) 2X St Champ, one of the three best wrestlers I ever coached, on 94 St Championship team.
145-Thomas Rhodes (2000) St Champ, on 2001 St Championship team.
152-Don Boone (1995) St Champ, also 96 at Valley Center, on 94 St Championship team, never wrestled before high school.
160-Gaylen Taylor (1997) St Champ
171-Earl Henry (1996,97) 2X runnerup to Scott Coleman, probably would of won it in any other years, but Coleman was an animal, never wrestled before high school
189-Tim Samilton (1996) St Champ
215-Nathan Bumphus (1996) St Champ, pinned his way through the state tournament, never wrestled before high school
275-Jerry Corner (1993,94) 2X St Champ, on 94 St Championship team, one of the three best wrestlers I ever coached, never wrestled before high school
Other wrestlers who deserve mention include Charles Knox, Joe Cornejo, Bryant Richard, Marcus Samilton, BL Chadwick, Mark Holley, Darren Moses, Delvon & Steffon Staley, Derrick Jackson, Jesse Guerrero and Todd Sanchez.

Coach Watkins - Who would win between the 1989 Danny Desahzer at 125 and the 2005 Tristen Deshazer? Would Tristen pin Danny with a headlock or would Danny shoot a single on Tristen to win?

Or, here is another thought - who wins a current, live, real-time match - Danny or Tristen? Just curious.

Dwelsh, Watkins is a great coach and teacher of wrestling that is how those kids improved so rapidly. However, if you take a look at the list of South High State Champions (Some 40 of them), only a hand full had prior wrestling experience before High School. Simply put: "Coach David Nigg is the greatest GWAL coach of all time." I haven't even included the 100 something state placers. How this coach never won a team title befuddles me to this day. Anyhow, since were on the discussion of great teams, I would pay good money to see this South team square off against Coach Watkins All-Time Greats. For those who don't remember there was a time when South/West duals filled the gyms. I can hear em now: "Ahhh Shucky Ducky!"
With the help of Richard Salyer I have now compiled this team:
103 - John Dao (I believe he beat Meyers everytime)
112 - Brian Scott (Tony Trevino??? Come on now)
119 - Ronnie Bainum (4x GWAL Champion 4x State Placer)
125 - Tony Dykstra (3x State Champion)
130 - Tico White (State Champion)
135 - Mike Church (State Champion)
140 - Danny Fox (4x GWAL Champion 2x State Champion)
145 - Brandon Calvin (State Champion)
152 - Jared Byrne (Byrne v. Boone, great matches!)
160 - Doug Smith (State Champion)
171 - Clint White (2x State Runner-Up)
189 - Joe Nelson (2x State Champion)
215 - Casey Rhinehart (Rematch! Lucky cradle!)
HWT - Lance Nelson (2x State Champion, Corner was a bad bad dude!)

Here's what I got for Clearwater. Nothing to terribly impressive, basically the 93 state championship team.

103: Michael Pelz, only placed once but won it as a senior giving Earl Jones several losses. To small for even 103 his freshman through junior year. (1997-2000)
112: Steve Rooney, 3rd, 2nd (1991-1994)
119: Brian Robinson, two time finalist, won it his junior year. (1981-1984)
125: Clint Luckner, 4th (1995-1998)
130: Scott Nienke, 2nd, 4th, suspended senior season week of regionals ranked 1st (1990-1993)
135: Josh Riley, 6th (1996-1999)
140: Hunter McMillen, 2nd, 2nd (1990-1993)
145: Wade Finney, 5th, 5th (1992-1995)
152: Lonnie Finney II, Clearwaters first state champ (1969-1972)
160: Jeff Long, 1st (1990-1993)
171: Lonnie Finney III, 4th, dq'd season year in semi's at state senior year (1990-1993)
189: Todd Sigwing, 2nd (1990-1993)
215: J.J. Finney, 4th, 1st, 1st, 1 lost junior and senior years from being dq'd for illegal slam. (1983-1986)
275: Justin Waymire, 3rd, 1st (1991-1994)

I think my first high school state tournament i went to was when one of the Finney's was beaten and went crazy on the mat. He flipped off the crowd and shoved a ref. it is a blurry memory but one that I have in my head. i might be off on the facts though? sorry if I am.

That would be Lonnie Finney III. There was a little taunting going on before the match and it continued after the match Lonnie doesn't have the best temper in the world. He started walking towards his opponent and the ref jumped in his was way, but Lonnie didn't stop and kept walking through the ref. He didn't really push the ref at all he just didn't stop when the ref wanted him too. Then he got dq'd, his dad came out of the stands, and for lack of better terminology, all hell broke loose.

The really crazy thing about that was it was the year Clearwater won the state title. Their 2 best wrestlers, Lonnie Finney III and Scott Nienke, didn't score any team points for them, and they still walked away with the title. Lonnie after losing that match would very likely have taken 3rd, and Nienke dominated the guy that ended up winning his weight class.

That's a good list Coach Moore, I remember seeing quite a few of those guys when we wrestled Concordia. I'll really have to look back at weights and such to come up with Chapman's list.

Well, it would appear, obviously, that he tweaked the guidelines just a hair so that he could get Vandever in. I am sure the ACBD knows his AC history. I don't see a problem with it, but KSHSAA might.
