103-Too much smack about Rogers and Furches being the real finals-Furches probably didn't think so when McCormick put him on his back twice- great kids;outstanding wrestling for the next couple of years to come
112-Caldwell is a stud-no competition; him and Livengood would have been a great match
119-Livengood shows why he has the most wins in Kansas High School History;Perez and Altman are great kids, however, it was Livengood's weekend
125-another too much smack about the semis being the finals-Shumate and Ely are amazing wrestlers-the Tanenbaum-Almaguer semi was one of the best matches of the weekend- Tanenbaum gives such a great effort his matches are fun to watch-Almaguer has placed 2-3-2 at states. In the toughest weight class in 6A Ely shows he made the right decision
130-Bobby Hurd is one of the most athletic wrestlers out there-strong, tough, physical-if he can wrestle this summer and get improved technique he is D1 material
135-Traina wrestled smart throughout the whole tournament and did what he had to do;5A 135 was, however, the toughest weight
140-Hoshaw from Manhatten looked great in the finals; not a lot of depth in the weight class but good overall wrestling
145-Thibault dominated in the finals, however it was his semifinal with Sibala that was one of the best matches-Sibala is another wrestler that is entertaining to watch
152-Beard did an outstanding job-His technique is quite high level;just like his teammate Caldwell
160-Cotton is a stud-2 time state champion that has a good chance of winning 4;class act
171-Kellerman did a good job-again a 2-0 semifinal hang on win against Watkins allowed him to remain unbeaten-not flashy, just steady
189-Evans wrestle Metzger tough in a well balance final that had two tough kids going at it
215-Edison comes through-Born is a great athlete and if he could do some summer wrestling could have potential D1 capabilities (see Hurd)
275-Jessen did what he had to do; 5A 275 Payne is the stud of all the 275's

he didn't, he beat Rogers by 2, I think, and he won in the finals

in my opinion i think 6A had some very tough weights, and some very weak weights, as did all classes. it just depends on what weight you were at.

it was a close match.
mccormick wrestled furches twice this year. the first time he got teched and the second time got pinned early in the first or second period.

Nathan did wrestle a great match, shucks, McCormick wrestled a great match. I knew he would be up for it. How good did McCormick wrestle? It was the first time all year that Nathan, my son had been on his back. Again, the first time, not saying that to brag on my son, but to brag on McCormick. It goes to show that some people show up at state. Nate told me that it was one of the most powerful power halfs he had ever felt. He fought out to only get the two count both times. I am glad the two Nate's will be teammates this summer wrestling for Team Kansas. Kansas mighty might power continues.

Thanks for the kind words about McCormick. He did have a great tournament and is wrestling with a lot of confidence. Tell your son congratulations, and that he is a great champion and has always handled himself like one on and off the mat.

Coach, those words mean more than you will ever know. As I have said in the past I don't know if I can think of a bad young man in the entire 103 class. They have great families and great coaches. I look forward to seeing both Nate's excel for Team Kansas this summer. I can't think of a kid that I or my wife was more excited for than Nate McCormick last year. I know he will represent all of us and make us proud this summer.

What 'right decision' did Ely make? To have a growth spurt that made it all but impossible for him to make 119? The kid had less than 2% body fat weighing 125. I guarantee the top 3 guys at 119 were very happy to see him move up. If I were Shumate, Almaguer or any of the other quality wrestlers at 125, I would definitely be offended by your insinuations that they are a bunch of creampuffs as compared to Perez, Livingood and Altman at 119.

RLVC...i dont know if thats what he was trying to say, perhaps he was simply saying that ely being stronger at 125 was a better personal desicion then cutting so hard to 119. but you make a good point, as almaguer beat livengood last year..and livengood ended up winning 119 this year 119's top 3 wrestlers were hardly better then 125's top 3 in my opinion.

i dont know about any desicion stuff but adam wrestled ely 3 times and came away with 3 losses we have known of ely and have wrestled him a couple times as kids and have yet to beat him he is a great kid and a great wrestler getting down to weight during the season can be tuff and was getting hard as well for adam to get down to 125 as the season wore on ,going up to 130 was close to happening for adam for the same reason as ely....as for livengood adam did beat kenny 3 times last year but that was last year kenny is one tuff dude and totally earned his state championship this year so to try and compare 119 to 125 is a mood point both classes had some outstanding and super classy nice kids off the mat....congradulations to ely and kenny you both earned it ....

Thoroughly enjoyed the entire show in Wichita. As stated above, the 119 and 125 classes were a treat to watch in ALL sessions. The key matchups lived up to all of the pre-tournament billing, especially the Furches-Rogers match. Especially enjoyed the 4-mat arrangement, getting back to the hotel at a decent hour on Friday and the overall flow of the tournament. Really missed 4A not being in the same house, but the wrestling was good and exciting. Sat next to the Manhattan section and was impressed with their wrestling intelligence. Now I better understand the wit and character of some of their past representatives. And, most of all, met many old friends from years passed and reminded me how special the Kansas wrestling FAMILY truly is.

I see what you are saying, brentvoth. That is probably true. As for any of the 6 wrestlers involved in this discussion, Altman, Perez, Livingood, Shumate, Almaguer and Ely - any one of them could probably win a match with any of the others on any given day. Altman proved that last year vs Ely in the semis and this year vs Perez in the semis. I do believe Ely would win more matches than anyone else in the group if you had several round robin sessions over several weeks. From what I have seen, he is the most consistent in level of performance. This wasn't always the case, but over the last couple of years I believe it to be true. As for the comment on Livingood beating Ely this year - Ely dominated that match 90% of the time. Livingood showed why he is a champion by figuring out a way to win that war while he lost almost all of the battles. (A little help from the ref didn't hurt his cause, either - 2 questionable stalling calls in the last 30 seconds, the last coming as the towel boy was smacking him)

but earlier in that match there was a very questionalble reversal that ely got. which is the reason ely was up 8-7. i do believe that one of the stalling calls was questionable but like i said both wrestlers got questionable calls which put the match to a tie.
