It is quite a feat! How many relatives do the Garcia's have that have been State Champs?

Roberson, Metzler, ... ?

Zach Roberson, Mike Garcia's nephew and Cody's cousin, also won a Division I NCAA National Championship in 2004 wrestling for Iowa State and was a four (4) time KSHSAA State Champion.

Our posts crossed - Roberson won four titles.

Father Mike Metzler won two titles, son Luke Metzler won three titles, and son Seth won one title.

Next year we may be able to add Judd Schroeder to the list as he is also a cousin.

I wish I could remember what Mike Garcia has told me in the past but the number of relatives, that have been State Champs is quite extensive and included more than Roberson and the Metzlers!

Arguably, the best wrestling family in Kansas!

Coincidentally, if not for a Charles Knox headlock in the third period of the 2002 KSHSAA State Championship semi-final match, a match Cody was winning up to the fateful head lock, Garcia would have faced Josh Baldridge in the Championship finals.

Josh Baldridge went on to win the first of his four Championships defeating Charles Knox in the finals.

Certainly there is no argument from me the family is the FIRST family of Kansas wrestling and oddly, the genetics relating the families are from their mothers. I believe all the mothers are sisters and were from the Harrison's in Newton.

Congratulations to both father and son! Getting to know Coach Garcia the last five years has been an incredible learning experience and pleasure.

I'm proud to say that I wrestled a National Champion lol. Even though it was an ugly sight.

I Know first hand that those Harrison Girls are some of the toughest Gals arouind, they take after their Mother. Lots of hard wrestling boys.
