Cardinals open slate
The Labette Community College Cardinals wrestling team, coming off a third-place finish last season in the NJCAA national tournament, opened the 2006 season over the weekend at the LCC Multi-Purpose Gymnasium.
After taking part in the season-opening Takedown tournament on Saturday, the Cardinals opened their season with a 31-10 duel victory over Pratt Community College.
"Overall, I thought we had some good performances from our wrestlers," Labette head coach Joe Renfro said.
"At 157, Willy Pendleton beat Jason Nichols from Pratt (by decision 3-2), who might be the best wrestler in the nation. It was a good win for Willy."
Returnees from last year's nationally-ranked team that competed Sunday include returning All-Americans Tim Elliott (133) - who won by major decision over James Fox, 13-2; Tommy McCarty (184) - won won by fall over Jeren Scheer; and Willie Weber (heavyweight) - who won by fall at the 3:41 mark over Carl Wilkinson.
Another heavyweight that might turn some heads this season is none other than Ben Hohensee.
Renfro said Hohnensee, a freshman from Monet, Mo., could make an impact.
"I don't know if it will be today, next week or next month," Renfro said of Hohnensee. "At some point in time, he's going to be a good wrestler here."

LCC clamps down on Neosho
By Mack McClure
Sports Editor
The empty feeling of not winning an NJCAA national championship last season still pries at some of Labette Community College's wrestlers.
Returnees Tim Elliott (125 pounds), Josh Baldridge (133), Tommy McCarty (174) and Willie Weber (heavyweight) all captured All-America honors last season.
But the Cardinals, who won the national title in 2005, fell short of a repeat in 2006 and finished third in the team standings.
"Three of the four are still mad that they didn't win a national championship last season," Labette head coach Joe Renfro said of McCarty and Baldridge (fourth-place national finishers), along with fifth-place finisher Elliott. "They're not happy about it at all.
"Willie Weber (who was a seventh-place finisher) has kind of taken it in stride. He's just going out there with the attitude he has nothing to lose."
Wednesday night in Chanute, the Cardinals used a blue-collar-type of performance to dismantle Neosho County 33-9.
"It was one of those nights where there weren't any individuals that stood out," Renfro said. "I think we came out and wrestled well as a team."
The likes of Weber, Baldridge and McCarty captured victories, while Elliott's weight division was open.
On Saturday, Labette travels to Omaha, Neb., to take part in the Omaha Ryan Kaufman Open. The matches start at 9 a.m.

Pendleton, Yust place
OMAHA, Neb. - The Labette Community College wrestling team had two placers over the weekend in the Omaha Ryan Kaufman Open.
Willy Pendleton (149 pounds) took second place, while Joe Yust (157) was a fourth-place finisher for Labette.
"The Omaha Open was a very good tournament showing from the Cardinals," LCC head coach Joe Renfro said. "We only placed two, but the guys battled hard and had some great wins.
"Most of the starting line-up went at least 3-2, and had several promising matches. I believe we learned a lot as a group, we know that we need to improve and we will."
The Cardinals were dealing with the fact that the opposition has had a lot more mat time thus far.
"We've only had two real matches before this event and most of our opponents here had already wrestled anywhere from 10-to-15 times," Renfro said. "We'll gain experience from here on out."

Elliott, Weber impressive at Oklahoma Open
NORMAN, Okla. - The Labette Community College wrestling team had a short Thanksgiving break as the Cardinals took part in the University of Oklahoma Open on Saturday at the Lloyd Noble Center.
Five LCC wrestlers placed over the weekend.
Tim Elliott (125) not only won his weight division for the Cardinals.
"He also beat the 2006 No. 1 recruit in the nation in Ben Ashmore of Oklahoma State in the finals," Labette head coach Joe Renfro said. "Another highlight of the weekend was Willie Weber placing second and beating the No. 2-ranked 2006 heavyweight recruit (Nathan Fernandez of Oklahoma University) on the path to the finals."
Needless to say, it was a successful post-Thanksgiving trip down south.
"The guys wrestled very well and kept good spirits over the break," Renfro said. "Most athletes get to enjoy their Thanksgiving break with family from back home, but the Cards chose to spend their break with their new family of brothers while training for the OU Open.
"Last week was an excellent opportunity for the LCC wrestlers to gain camaraderie and good wrestling experience."
LCC travels to the Fort Hays State Open on Saturday.

The Cards are stompin butt these days... look out Iowa Central.
They will probably meet at the National Duels in January...
I predict a title for the Cards...A lot of strong contenders...not really any weak weights...that equals a lot of points. The regional is a grinder though...it is too bad all the Kansas schools have to go head to head to make it to Nationals.

Jason Santangelo Ast. Baseball Coach Labette Community College
Labette Moves To 4-0
Labette Cardinal Wrestling moves to 4-0 in dual competition with a stellar win over Colby Community College. The Cards won eight out of ten matches on Monday night earning them a 35-6 victory. After going to Colby and winning the dual in the last match, Coach Renfro and his men had something to give the Trojans for their 7 hour journey back to Northwest Kansas. Being only my second year here at Labette I have often heard athletes say "Don't mess with the Cardinals or you will get the beak" well Ladies and Gentlemen, that was the beak!! The Cards had 3 falls (pins), 2 major decisions (win by 8 or more) and 3 decisions. Our Cardinal Wrestling Team does not wrestle at home again until January 18th against Neosho.
If you were not able to attend the dual last night I strongly urge you to get to the Neosho dual. Not only is it your last time to watch your wrestlers at home but the Cards and the Panthers have never been too good of friends. Ever since the prehistoric days cats have killed birds but with the evolution of the Cardinal the birds have become stronger and the beaks become larger. I believe it is safe to say "The table have turned!"
Please congratulate your wrestlers as you see them today.

I believe he automatically becomes eligible since he transferred down in level Div. I to NJCAA, thus I believe he loses no eligibility. I could be wrong though.

Why did Cornejo transfer? I knew he was unhappy originally, but was there something that pushed him over the edge?

What a great Christmas present. The Cards are the team to beat. They have multiple guys (at least 6) with very legitimate shots to win titles. I like their odds!

From what I understand Cornejo won't be eligible until next fall. Apparently juco has a rule where you can't transfer in at semester in a sport that has a season over two semesters. The cards will have to wait until next year for Cornejo to compete. In the meantime...he is a nice addition to the practice room.

Doesn't this cause him to lose a year though? He already has redshirted...thus this would eat his clock.

On a slightly related note, how is TD from WW doing? I heard he was at the same school that Joe transferred from.
