Hello this is my sons 6U & 10U first year. They would both like to now try Freestyle/Greco. My question is should I let them or should they be allowed to get a couple of years of Folkstyle under their belts first? My concern is the rules differences will confuse them. Should this even be a concern?
Thanks, Brian Mize

Do it but keep it fun for them, A practice or two a week, maybe a tournament here or there. Truth is the old saying that Summer Wrestling produces Winter Champions is true. There are several great clubs around. I'll let the coaches promote their own clubs.

10 and under for sure, 6 and under-depends on the kid. Like Furches said, keep it fun and help them to grow into great wrestlers. It is not the Olympics, but it could be some day. We have WHY FS/ GR in Wichita at NW HS on Tues and Thurs nights from 6-8pm. All ages, boys and girls. Give me a call, email or PM if you want more info.

Thanks alot. We are in Nortonville but or Folkstyle club is Topeka Tornadoes. I was thinking of Jr Vikings or Sunflower Gold for Freestyle/Greco.
Thanks again, Brian

I encourage you to do it. There are some really good freestyle coaches in your area and they'll keep it fun. I'll look forward to seeing your wrestlers at some tournaments.

I believe freestyle/greco helped my son alot. But, pick your tournaments well. Last year my son was still 9 and he ended up wrestling a 14 year old and 2 12 year olds in a tourament. If your son is at a high weight for a 10 year old he can get in a bracket w/ kids 3 and 4 years older in some tournaments. He didn't like it. So we made a deal, he does freestyle/greco, but we only go to events where they keep kids in their actual age groups. We are only doing 2 tournaments this summer - Southern Plains in Hutch and State. Its just for fun.
